I will run the relay cut out test case through the SPICE model that I have built for the Phase Linear amp and advise if it discloses much.....Regardless, once clip is hit, the final small imbalances between the plus and minus rail will be seen at the output and trip the relay circuit as well.

Clear as mud guys??

I suspected that somehow there was some asymetry, but couldn't explain it. I was thinking feedback loops or frequency response, but wasn't about to speak without supporting test data. This makes a lot of sense.

My test set for the 700 board uses a variable +/- DC supply to insert an offset voltage. The trip point is about +/- 8VDC. The power supply is unregulated and has about 150mv of ripple.

Hey, I just had an idea. With those of us in VA (Wise, Powhatan, Manassas) and folks from other countries such as Oh-hio, Illi-noise, and Why-oming - why don't we start a group meeting. Like AA for Phase Linear equipment. We could start a Phase Linear User Group (PLUG). Hold our first meeting in some central location, like Virginia...

I would be game but you know, geographically speaking, Iowa is located directly in the very center of PhaseLand. Or we could all meet where it started, in Lynnwood.

Hey Mark, Dont know if Sutton told you but while working on my Hum I hooked up my other Halfer p-500 and its working like new... What i did to fix the hum was put a three to two prong adapter on the power cord. Will that hurt anything. That or unhooking my cable took care of my hum.... My father-in law who worked for the cable company for years and now works for Verizon said I may have voltage coming in on my cable.... Ive not checked for that yet.......... Ok, the other thing I want to ask you about is my two hafler DH 200's. Ive looked inside and see no blown fuses or anything. Like I know what to look for ... lol. The power switch light comes on but thats all. One of them could not be turned off by the switch so needless to say it got left on for long periods of time... one day my tweeters were not working and neither was it . Id like to know how to bridge the switch on it and try that. Thats just a thought being that it had a bad switch to start with..... Ok , Lee , Joe,.... Chime right in here.... Didnt mean to leave yall out. Or anyone else for that matter...... Thank yall !!!!!!

Hafler wired their switches with one AC wire on one side just after the fuse (throw terminal 2), the other side had a wire leading to the transformer primary and the power light inside the switch (pole terminal 1 "On"), and a third wire coming off the switch to a resistor diode cap network that bypassed the thermal switches (pole terminal 3 "Off"). There was no hot or neutral because the plug was a two prong non-polarized. There is also a .005 1000V ceramic cap between terminals 1 and 2.

I'll go ahead and say YEA and THANK YOU for Kevin. He's going to soil himself..I am afraid you may have created a Monster with this amp...And I'm not saying the AMP is the Monster....we know it is...I'm talking about Kevin....He'll be the MONSTER.. Lee likes it LOUD. Kevin likes it LOUDER (I don't know that that is possible......but ya get my drift)...and without a fan...I am very concerned..

Thank you for the opportunity to work on your amplifier. You have a real keeper with that one. I could not get it to shut down due to high temperature even running it 24 hrs into my 5 Ohm speakers (at slightly reduced volume levels after 10:00PM) but it does get warm! The combination of higher rail voltage, new storage caps, the WOA main board, and the new outputs make me proud of the assembly and oh, by the way - it sounds awesome.

Send pictures when you get it hooked up...

You were correct, I had to substitute new screws that were 1/4" longer to have enough threads to grab, because the caps were at the limit of the clamp size (1 9/16") but the fit was good. As a bonus, the 2-screw spacing was the same as the original Phase Linear 3-screw spacing, so no new holes were required.

Joe, do you have any feelings on the HP 333A or the HP 334 vintage distortion analyzers. I have found one of each for around $200 and I would appreciate your opinion.

Thanks,

Mark
