Johan's Phase Linear 700B Fully Comp Conversion

lee.....dont want to pain in the bud...dont want you waist a board and time...would it be possible that all is perfect and that my ears just prefer the other unit?..just left the pl out of the system...switched with a marantz 510M I have to ship this week....and it is clearer...is something playing tricks on me....lol..besides swapping boards,would like to find out what was wrong with this one...will you analyse before and after swapping to compare numbers?...there is no rush in sending it back or in anything...have a few spare amps I can play with for my back speakers.....thanks...400 looks great...
 
Yeah, I'll compare numbers, but the numbers that count are between your ears. Johan, the sound of a fully comp over a quasi is sooo different .......and in all cases but yours is preferred. So, I'll put a new board in it, won't abuse it and you can tell me if it's different...

I did a test 4 days ago to make sure I'm not crazy but in my findings here's what happens to my 400. If I power it on and play music it sounds terrible. It's bright as hell the sound isn't together. It seems to swirl around. But after 2 days of continuous run time it comes together and sings so beautiful. The swirl goes away. The bass way tightens up. The complete image of the amp changes. I will not power mine down ever again unless I'm going out of town. This is just my take on my amp but might be worth a shot!
 
That 510L and the 700B should sound pretty close. Both are Fully Complimentary. The Marantz looks like a Series 1 400 w/ 700B knobs.

sounds like exactly what I have on my 700....but am not comfortable at all leaving it on all the time....it goes back 20 years.....but I had my house burn down because of a dryer left on while gone for diner..firemen called me 3 hours later....am maybe to scared for nothing....but I always make sure nothing is on when i leave my house...on top I like to understand things...and this is not a solution for me....thanks for the opinion...

lee.....want me to try this before sending back?...will sleep in my living room next to it....lol....

very different sound....much more tube sound on the 510M...not as agressive....but i hate the lack of strong damping factor...510M hits red zone at first bass when slightly pushed...no headroom at all....but it is a great unit for somebody who doesnt need volume or listens to very soft classical/jazz music I THINK......my normal listening volume is close to red zone/clipping on the 510M....so i need more headroom....the 400 has it...its all damping factors....i kind of walk away from any amp now thats doesnt have at least 500 or more...1000 is good for me...my rotel 1080 had it..less watts than the 510M,but no peaking ever when bass was needed...like the 400....just my 2 cents feeling...
 
have a good friend who uses 510M but speakers are jbl L300's....mush higher sensitivity than mine.....so maybe thats why he s happy with his 510M....mine are like 90dB if i remember well...power hungry L250's and L 112's.....maybe I should go to Klipsh ...
but expensive move....lol..

johan, even if you bought a new set of K-Horns it would still cost ya 3,000.00 to upgrade the drivers to what I have....
