Ditto, you are getting there Jer. Lot of work to strip the chassis all the way down.

With this one I didn't do too much as far as the "guts", just those two WW resistors (I hope that's all)

Hey Joe - With the jumper between 5L and 5R, is there any real reason not to run the chassis ground to 5L instead of 5R?? Just thinking.... shorter wire and nothing running along the bottom between the two main terminal sections.

5L is the preferred connect location Jer, please refer to the schematic I posted. Yeah it is for a 700 but the same ground connections apply to the 400 as well.

Your chart says 5R, Joe. That's where I ended up putting it, but if it should be 5L .. .either way seems to not matter I guess if you've been connecting 5R..

Hi Jer with the stock ground scheme in the PL400 the White ground comes from the right hand side, the copper ground pad by the RCA input jacks, this chart you are showing refers to a "stock" installation. I always use the "star point ground" improvement to lower the noise floor and eliminate ground loops which brings the White Ground into 5L instead. That scheme is "not stock" and is the one shown on the schematic in the WOPL Tips and Archives forum section.

Ah, gotya... I figured it had to do with star grounding versus stock being the determining factor. But honestly.. 5R's been where I have wired both the 400 and 700, and I can't really complain. I'll move this one on over to 5L tho and see if I hear a difference..

You will not "hear" a difference with the 5L or 5R location Jer, that is just a wiring convenience. You will hear a noise floor difference between the stock ground scheme and star point scheme however.

Yeah. I'm still doing the star scheme, but just using another 4 inches of wire hehe. I think I will move that on back to 5L then. If not for it looking just a wee bit better.. a wee bit, mind ya... :thumbright:

If you can hear any difference Jer, you have ears like an eagle...
 
And they hear very well. I've been to;d if they could fly high enough they could hear loud noises 500 miles away.
 
I feel sorry now Joe. I inundated you with the same 5R/5L question too. I bet you get this a lot. You have the patience of a saint.

LOL yep.. that lil varmit scared the crap out of me, as Lee will attest to.

So hmmm.. guess what I'm listening to? Yep, buttoned up enough to run it through the paces.

So now let me tell you guys about the 410's here... The ones on the right channel (came with this particular amp) I reused since they seemed fine.. checked out ok.. no probs! BUT... just as soon as I started to give it some good volume.. POOF... the bottom went out on the right. Didn't bother to scope it - it sounded bad BAD BAD. So now both have the 410's I originally had in the 700, working good.

I'd take a pic.. but there's this little story about frankenstein and how that concept was attempted to be applied to the LED's on the meters... NAH.. I'll wait til the new LED board from Joe gets here.. :toothy10:

Sounds.. GOOD.. really really good.. no smoke yet, so that's always a good sign.

And now I have a matching 400, hehe. Well... NOT for long, as next step is to make this guy actually LOOK like a WOPL (it's gonna be interesting.. :thumbright:)

lil bit of breadboard.. some LED's resistors cap n a bridge... oh yeah and some heat glue.. Serves the purpose but yeah if Joe could see how the PCB's would be mounted, that would be something! Either that or (I haven't tried em yet, but... ) I thought I saw some guy offering fuse lamps that have been converted with LED's? How he can squeeze the led (or maybe two?), the current resistor and a diode or two.. hmmm...
