My gosh you guys are opinionated.LOL From what I have read. And Sony only made a good deck after the 90s. You have to have a reference.
Larry
After the mid 90's the other Manufacturers only made one dual well deck each, Sony was the only one making single well and three head decks till about 2000 or so. Prior to that almost every manufacturer made a worthy deck.
My Yamaha was made till 3 years ago. Single well. 3 head.

Larry
I'm curious to know which deck that is also.

I certainly didn't mean to offend anyone. I simply said "I thought X brand made not so ggod stuff, but I am wrong.," The JVC sold for $310.00. Well over what I will pay for a deck. I'm still in the beolw $100.00 market, including shipping. I think I should be able to get a very nice deck in that price range. Having not heard ANY cassette deck in over 25 years, I'm simply asking for advice from those of you who have, and who own and operate cassette decks on a regular basis. I just don't know what sounds great and what might sound like J#*%. Please accept my apologies if I have offended anyone through my ignorance. I never meant to hurt or offend anyone.

Just looking for advice to find a GREAT cassette deck on the cheap.

I don't think you offended anyone. My advice would be to find a 3 head deck on ebay, doesn't really matter what brand name. Try to find it from reliable ebay seller, since most sellers will say everything works fine but we didn't have a tape to test it. Now if you want auto reverse then you will be looking for a two head deck, be ware if you are picky and have super sensitive ears a three head deck may record and playback slightly better than a two head deck. You may or may not notice the difference.

That said I would look for a Yamaha, Onkyo, JVC, Sony, Denon, there are quite a few three head decks going for under $100 bucks. Do an ebay search of cassette decks with three heads. Something like the deck listed below. I am not saying that these are great decks or a great sellers, you have to do the homework on both. If you find some then maybe post them and ask for an opinion on them. The difference between a mid level and high end deck in sound isn't all that much but in price it will be a great difference. diminishing returns like everything else in audio.

There are whole slew of questions you need to answer before looking for a new deck though?

Do you want silver or black faced?

Is auto reverse important?

Do you want Dolby, C or S compatibility?

Do you want analog or digital meters?

Do you want auto tape calibration or do you prefer to calibrate your bias manually?

Etc etc etc.

Tell us what you want from a deck and it will be easier for us to help you.

Maybe you could swing some sort of deal with Larry for one of his Tascam decks?

I just watched a LX-5 go for 45.00. There are some sleepers out there. I can't say what all they are. For me to get the K-2000.I saved the search for I think a year before one popped up on ebay.

I will say this. The source you are recording from does make a difference. I just emailed Fred this morning about your belts. Will see. It has taken far to long.

Sutton, you're just fine, no offence was taken here. We talk alot of smak to each other, we should tone it down abit, but they goad me on

Great list there Web :thumbright:

The first one that Denon, is a step down from mine, which a mighty fine machine, weighs about 10lbs, but a real heavyweight soundwise!

Of course I like those two Teac's at the bottom of the list, love the black :love10: , the first of the two is in Nashville TN, maybe Tom, 'nakdoc' could check it out?
That same seller has a Sony TC-K909 ES for sale too, that would be about the last deck you would need for a long time. It's at $165 with 1 day to go, if you could stretch your budget a bit, something like that would be a keeper for sure, http://www.ebay.com/itm/Sony-TC-K909-ES ... 3f0dc34ac4

  Bite me WHORE!!!!! :rabbit:

Sutton another thing is with the top models you usually get a source/digital direct input, which makes very nice recordings from a CDP, it bypasses most of the extra circuitry in the preamp section, very nice feature to have

OK Web
There are somethings I was wrong about my little yammie. Before I bought it.Vintage didn't have it listed. It was still being sold in the UK in 2007. The price is 200 GBPs not dollars. For the day that little deck had some bells and whistles. It does make a nice tape.I read where it was a 3 head. So if I'm wrong. Then I'm wrong. Can you give me a Sony built the same time with the same features?

Larry,

I am not saying that it isn't a nice solid deck. It looks like manufacturers made decks for the European market longer than they did for the US market. By the time that Yamaha was produced Sony really only made Dual Well and High End ES decks.

I don't doubt that production probably ended in 2003 on that deck and some of the retailers may still have them to sell to this day. I know Teac and Tascam made single decks in that time frame but I don't really know of any other manufacturers that made two or three head single well decks much past the mid 90's.

I posted a thread on this awhile back, nobody read it. Anyway, cassettes are still the source of choice in Africa so it makes sense that manufacturers would still make them and the Limeys would still buy them
