The belts were mailed. Just looking at it. And the little research I have done. The belts cost more than you would get for the deck. Not trying to pop your bubble. I'll do everything to it and listen to it. It doesn't have a metal setting. That is fine by me. Will see what happens.

Looks like those hot, humid VA summers did a number on the old belts, Sutton it was your first nice deck, worth keeping just for that reason, I wish I still had my SAE C101 that got stolen. If you see one let me know!!

I'm sory about that. I didn't think they were gooey, maybe sticky. The deck is about 30 years old, so I guess it is time for a rebelt, plus I haven't use it in 15 years, and it has been in a storage unit...If I did buy the one(s) on eBay for $20.00, I'll bet those belts probably need changing too. I agree with you that I need another better cassette deck if I'm going to use one regularly...but like you said, let's wait and listen. It sounded pretty darn good back in the day with the Luxman and Maggies. I remember auditioning a Nak, and in my mind, the Hitachi bettered it. But that has been along time ago, and I don't know ahich model of Nakimichi I had to audition either. After listening, I am still game to get a better deck. What about a Yahama or maybe the Pioneer you have for sale?

Just wondering, but you'll be able to tell me in a few days..na I'll keep an eye out for an SAE Stuwee!!

Thanks

It is built like the older Pioneers. It looks a lot like them inside and out. Don't let any one tell you there aren't some very nice 2 head decks. The 3rd head is so you can hear what it is going to sound like on the tape. A 2 head you can't. A good 2 head will cost less. Like you said you may be happy with this one.

I've been eyeballing the Yamaha KX-1020 and the KX-1200. I am going to bid on the 1020 on eBay, so don't outbid me!!!! It seems to have a lot of supporters. You still have the KX-1200. Is it one of the better ones? Or is there a better sounding deck?

I like the 1200. Very nice deck in my book. The 1020 is the one I'm rebelting. The K-1000 has no belts. It is direct drive. Nak LX series are nice decks.

OK Did you bid on it? It has transport problems. The belt kit is my price 30.00

Tome these are the 3 you want. This is my opinion. If you want yamaha. K-1000,K-2000,KX-1200. To me they are the best decks.

There are some nice LX-3s for sale.

It went higher than my bid amount by about ten bucks. I was only wanting to go to about $65.00 so I did not win it. I am sure there will be another one coming down the road. I think, from what I have read, that this might be the deck for me, or a 1200, if I can find one in good cosmetic condition for under $75.00 including shipping. Any other suggestions? I'm really waiting to see how good or bad the Hitachi sounds to you, Larry, after re-belting and cleaning it up. I may or may not need anything "new".

So Larry,

How goes the Hitachi D-550 re-belt project? Any progress to report? I know you have tons of other stuff to do-----just wondering...Hoping you are going to say....."Man, this thing is awesome, WOW!!" but thinking it's probably going to be something like....."Yeah, this deck sounds ok...I've heard better, but I've heard worse.."

Just anxious, as we all are, to have our goodies, with new life breathed into them back in thhe rack, enjoying some good music..while reliving our YOUTH....LOL

Stil gotta find THAT deck....the one that does it for me, for 25 cents, complete with re-belt, new in a box, having never been opened.....yea, right!!!!

I can guarantee a deck that will do it for you. I don't own one. Probably never. As deep as your jumping. This would be very nice deck. A deck worth having. You know what it is. Don't any one say Pioneer or I'm going to put you on probation. This is not a hard question. Buying it is another issue.

Ask Graham he has one.

Larry

PS No Belts yet.

Pffft! Pooey  , yeah pay $800, then give Willy Hermann another $1,400 to make it perfect, lot's of nice decks around for far less, look at any TOTL from anyone in 1992, my Teac, Nando's Esoteric, the Pioneer Elite's, Sony ES, Aiwa's monster 99000S, Tandberg 3014-A, I'd take any of those over a finicky Dragon, even Nak's own CR-7A is prbably better in the long haul, but it's not the most coveted deck, Dragon's are way overrated, do I want one? Yes I do

Dragon rebuilds do not cost $1400. Willy and I are both reasonable. The worst Dragon problems can be repaired for about $350. Most decks are less. Dragons are not overrated.
