Damn... I'm way behind on this thread !!!! SO... We are all going to vegas and taking a bunch of PL amps and a pair of K-horns . When are we leaving.... I missed that somewhere ????

But you're not worried about fans kicking full blast on the back?

I have to admit to being surprised at this, but I believe it, at least the measurement part. Hearing it...well I'll just have to trust you. :-)

RE Lack of agreement in general: no doubt about that. I don't know any two people who weight audio importance the same. General trends, sure, but no overall agreement.

Not if you want them to live at high output levels, fans are mandatory and like Lee said, if your using 4 ohm speakers, you NEED them. I can't even hear the fan I use when the volume is up even a little bit. Only need to when I plan to really raise some hell though! I notice heat varies depending on what I am listening to... Frank Marino is very demanding... meters might be sitting around 50% but then I will see first one meter swing to +3 and then a second or so later, the other meter swings up to + 3 while the other is back at 50%. Fun to watch but that's when the fins start to really warmup and it's time for the fan, especially if I plan to push much higher volumes. Miles Davis? I can have the amp near full output and the amp does not complain. I guess it really depends on how "busy" the music is. I play a lot of Metal so the fan is mandatory, especially when I am playing along with the stereo and have my 6505 up high enough for the tubes to start breaking up

At the SPL's created when needing a fan it's not noticeable.
 
Whats up with the heat issue on these things? Seems like they dont have long in the "hot" zone before theyre too hot. I understand the importance of fan cooling as both my pro amps use fans, but is it due to the amount of heat displacement the sinks are capable of?

Only once have I ever used a fan to cool the 1801. One channel was blown and I was running both speakers off the other. Now that channel would get screaming hot real fast. It would take a hot summer night and hours of high volume listening to put it into thermal protect with both channels running.

Mine is a 4 finner Ben, less cooling area. The other thing to remember is that most people don't have their system playing at SPL's that cause hearing loss. For the average user, it will never be an issue

Even with just the Quasi, I am pushing more power then the amp was originally rated at, 50+ a side extra. With an increase in power, there will also be an increase in heat. At spec level, the 400 will run pretty cool but again, that depends on the load it's driving. A hard look at cooling options should be considered though, some of us like to use the power available and have cool old ladies that are accustomed to it LOL

I have no issue setting a box fan on my amps, I use them, not showcase them

Not to mention hot amps sound better. That'll be another IMO. Of course, I can likely blame charred components, burnt boards and lifted traces on that opinion of mine.
 
In the old days, going into the red with the meters was a bad thing, these days (with the WOPL's) it just means that the meters need more range. I have yet to hear any type of distortion even when the meters are flatlined and that is so godawful loud that most people would quickly exit the area. I imagine a 700B taken to 1000+ are only 3dbs or less louder then the hotrodded 400s, not a whole lot louder. A good comparison of this is a Marshall 50w amp and a Marshall 100w amp, it's a little louder but not astronomically louder. I have had a few 500w+ per channel amps in the past and they were not much louder then my current 400, they sounded a little louder but BIGGER if you get my drift
 
Ben, their cooing fin area was wholly inadequate to begin with. And it aint got any better.

I was kinda wondering that when I first laid eyes on them. After seeing what you guys can do to them, im sure it only further compounds that restriction.

Ever put any thought into a custom chassis with more heat dissipation? Or is that just not an option?
