I have done the same thing. Cut the 2n5088 leads off flush with the back plane boards. Take the 2N5088's from the other backplane kit and get them epoxied into the P-straps and test fit so that the leads barely protrude into the backplanes ands solder back in. The trick is to not let the lead extend past the bottom of the backplanes. Solder quick and don't tarry, you do not want a solder blob dropping to the chassis.
