I have done the same thing. Cut the 2n5088 leads off flush with the back plane boards. Take the 2N5088's from the other backplane kit and get them epoxied into the P-straps and test fit so that the leads barely protrude into the backplanes ands solder back in. The trick is to not let the lead extend past the bottom of the backplanes. Solder quick and don't tarry, you do not want a solder blob dropping to the chassis.

they are in the 3403 holes. I had all my voltages before I popped q2, just no bias adj. They are probably in the wrong holes.

You have the 2N5088's in the 2N3403 holes. Joe's kits come with 5088 bias transistors. The 3403 option was there in case someone wanted to run the factory driver board with backplanes....or liked the 2N3403's better. The 3403's are an inferior part as far as the bias goes....

I'm glad you like them. I'll put the tranny's in the other holes. I was pretty sure that the heat sink won't reach using the other holes but I'll look at it. Piece of cake.

I thought it was pretty cute....It's too bad I haven't videoed all my power ups, some were EPIC...The leads on the 5088's are long enough. Don't bury the 5088 in the P-strap. Just get the body of the tranny past the edge so the body is all the way in, just not very far past the edge of the P strap. then place the tranny/p-strap over the 4-40 post and standoff, then plot where your bend has to be to line up with the solder pads. I like to bend them at about a 45 degree angle so you have a little angle and length to mess with....

Check all the 1/4 watt resistors on the backplanes, R36 on the driver board. Are any of the predrivers getting hot? Did you check ALL picos on the backplanes?

I'll check. I didn't leave it plugged in very long. I checked a 4 Pico's, just the one was open.

There can be a little collateral damage doing what you did. It's not catastrophic, small stuff. Shorting Q2 on the low voltage supply might also throw us a wild card...did the low voltages check correct after replacing Q2, can't believe the TL 431 lived through that...

Now is where a Variac is handy. You can keep it powered up in wounded mode but still at a low voltage. Helps to chase problems sometimes...

all the 1/4 watts are good, pico's are good. I must have took out more than Q2, I still have no -15 on control board.

VR2 did NOT live, replaced but must have took the diode with it.

Thought so, those TL 431's are not that robust...but then they don't have to be....till something goes wrong.

Well, got my -15 back and my relay is kickin. It took out D81, Q2 and VR2.... I'm about toast for the night. Still no bias adj.....
