Miles: Next year sees me having a deck capable of 15 i.p.s.- I have something in the works. But yes, it would be costly to ship such a tape and we just have heard our postage in Canada will be rising significantly in 2014.

Speaking of that, I tried to view the US HK site and this damned pernicious window wouldn't let me until I entered an email adress to get on a list.

So I typed f---off@die... and it surrendered, after which I emailed their PR lawyer and asked if that was how things ran since Dr. Harman died?

To date, no answer whatsoever.
 
Nostalgic Comeback....

A nice article in a Dutch newspaper this morning:

It tells about the nostalgic comeback of the cassette, the 50th anniversary of it (an exhibition in the National Philips Museum) and the growing exposure of this medium
by mixtapers and young artists.

I haven’t bought much new music this year. Instead (as previously mentioned in this thread), I have chosen to sift through my CD collection and take out those discs that I either no longer play or I can live without.

During this process I have rediscovered a few gems. One such item is this box set from The Cult which I have owned since it came out in 1991. I was a huge fan of this band back in the 80s - especially their Love/Electric period.

I have known for a while that some of the discs from this set were pressed by PDO so I have always tried to regularly check their condition. Over the years I have probably had around 25 CDs that were manufactured by PDO and affected by bronzing. They have all been discarded.

Going through this 10 CD box set, it is interesting to note that there are now very faint signs of degradation. Four of the discs are showing the symptoms of discolouration. This normally begins from the outside edge and works in slowly. I suspect storage conditions play a role that dictate the speed of the corrosion.

It was difficult to get good photos, but you can just about see that the disc at the top is more of a bronze colour than the one below.

Even the rice paper inserts have been affected.

They still play without issue and no doubt have a considerable way to go before they are corrupted. The remaining six discs are fine. This problem has been well known for a number of years but I still find it a source of annoyance every time I give one of these afflicted CDs a spin – even more so when they form part of a very desirable box set.
 
Daren: I hadn't a clue about CD degradation, and I mean a physical breakdown of the media. I have very few box sets, and the Cult one must be collectible if it was released in the 90's. Box sets are more popular now than they were back then.

Miles: Hold it... cassette mix tapes are experiencing a comeback? Why didn't the rest of us die-hards just keep up with new technology. I love to see old becoming new, again.

I have never seen that Cult boxed set. Didnt even know it was out there. Sweet set Daren. I've always liked The Cult. Astbury is a great singer IMO, and there has never been anything wrong with any of Billy Duffy's chops either.
 
Rek - O - Kut...

I've spotted something about "Rek - O - Kut" in Nick Danger's signature and was wondering what that could be....

If I translate "Rek - O - Kut" (it sounds and is written like something in Dutch language) I will get something VERY vulgair. (it's almost pornography)

NO! Not stupid, there are others here that can give a proper presentation on Rek-O-Kut history, and a storied history it is.

In comparison to what "Rek - O - Kut" means in Dutch language it still is a stupid tonearm for a turntable... :toothy10: :toothy10: ;-)
