I decided to put this comment in my post on the "Birth of a New Model One" instead of “What Are You Listening To Today” to note an observation that I have had with the Model One that we really have not discussed yet. Joe’s design for the WOPL 400 ( I and Series II) and the 700 (B and Series II) with the “Dual Mono” boards has always amazed me when listening to so many of my original 40’s to 60’s LP’s that were recorded in Mono. The design just brought new life to these recordings, amazing depth and clarity.
The new Model One really shines in this regard, and after listening to many of my older recordings, I had to comment on how profound this is. If you look at how Joe designed the Model One, it is the perfect “Dual Mono” design, each channel is totally independent, and we can fine tune this in each channel with the Jumper Settings. I love this design. It’s been about a month since I finished the Model One, and I have enjoyed trouble free, incredible listening every day since.
I am putting up Dinah Washington’s “In The Land Of Hi-Fi” LP from 1956. This is an original first pressing from 1956. It is mint shape, no crackles, no pops, just as clean as can be. I cannot believe how incredible this sounds, her voice is strong, bold and so clear. The Hal Mooney orchestra behind her is equally amazing. We usually talk about headroom, and soundstage, imaging etc. when describing an amplifier, but the Model One takes listening to these older very well engineered mono LP’s to a new dimension. Granted all things in the system have to be compatible but as blown away as I have been with my WOPL 700b’s ….. playing the same recordings with the Model One in the system adds so much more to the term “Hi-Fi”, and as the title of Dinah Washington‘s album says, she was “In The Land of Hi-Fi” with this recording. So many times, I put one of my oldies on, and when the music starts, I just smile from ear to ear, it’s as good as it gets ! Often I simply smile, and say “Wow” out loud. This new Model One shines all around, and is dead quiet at idle, between tracks. I don’t post much of that early music, figure no one really wants to see, or hear it, but I love it, and the Model One lets me hear it at its absolute best. I often comment regardless if it is an older Mono recording or Stereo LP, CD, or Streaming “This is the way it was recorded”, and meant to be heard.
Thanks again Joe !!!
