Double blind tests and other things. When I listen to different components I am pretty objective. I have changed many a part that had a Krylon overhaul. It either worked or it didn't. The Krylon or pretty picture didn't influence me. I have changed 4 O/H CSDs in a week. This is not a fun job. They came out of Miami with yellow tags on them. I kept hanging them run the engine and it was bad. Hanging CSDs on a hot engine is not fun. Since they didn't fix it I had to put the old one back on.

When I buy something I do know what sound I am looking for. If it doesn't do what I want it will set on my shelves till someone else wants it. If something doesn't do what I think it should. If it is used I don't spend a great deal of money on it. I'm not to say it cost a bunch of money therefore I must like it. Not happening. Just because I bought a CD by an artist I like. Doesn't mean I will like it. If something I bought doesn't improve the sound to me. I figure I have learned a good lesson. Yesterday I put a CD of Kenny Wayne Sheppard it. I sit here and wondered if I was hearing things. It was so bad it wasn't funny. The highs were muddled. So I sat back and wondered if the Oppo was the weak link. Just put the new Santana in. " Shape Shifter " sounds very nice. The highs are fast and crisp.

I'm not going to get into wires. If you don't think I'm objective. I have a few pretty well known CDPs in my closet. They didn't past the Larry test and they are taking a break. LOL

My final words are. None of us own the same systems. You may like the CDPs in the closet. They may have synergy with your ears. Or they may sound good because of the name, the price, or someone else has it. As long as it sounds good. Even if it is in your mind. That is all that matters. You paid for it. That is all that matters. As long as you are happy. Others may think your an idiot. Oh well their loss. You are happy. I'm happier with this Dynaco than a pig in crap. I won't say what it cost me. It was a very good buy. The Norman Labs are a lot cheaper speaker than the Epos. Like the NL better. Oh well. See ya

There are a lot of gems out there Larry that don't have to cost you a fortune. Some of these occurred somewhat accidentally and a following emerged as a result (sometimes not though).

Examples I am lucky enough to possess that just sound great to me for nearly no money:
Dynaco A-25 2 way speakers.
Realistic TM-1001 FM tuner
Phase Linear 400 (and PL200 Mk 2 as well)

Different strokes for different folks.

I like the Oppo and the Dynaco. Both of them together was less than 150.00. I have ICs that cost more than that. LOL I like this system so much I don't mind being in here watching concerts.

Its just that I feel that while I believe people try to be objective, there is a measure of self deception that we are often unaware of due to the way ears and brains function.

Also, I prefer high quality interconnects, but not really for performance differences. More like quality reassurance. It's like locking a door and checking it a couple times, just to be sure.

So, I play devils advocate on your post, while being contrary and maybe even a little hypocritical, all at the same time. woohoo!

Reminds me of something I read in a two thousand year old book. A man can think his own feces smells sweet.

I have a pair of Tara Labs ICs that cost over 400.00 for 1 meter. I used them for 6 months. Then I hooked them up to the Shanling one day during my testing. I said that sounds different. If I was going to fool myself I think I would have done it before 6 months. LOL

I was taught not to let my thinking of something get in the way when doing tests. Sometimes being objective has cost me money. LOL

while the most important aspect for me is enjoying the music, i'll freely admit to being a gear-head with a fetish for big speakers and amps, so i do listen to the gear as well. in regards to wire, after having done my own non-scientific testing, i dont really care to listen to this cable or that cable any more. whatever differences they impart on the sound, i dont believe those differences are important.

I seem to have an affinity for well engineered music presented in a way to break up the frustrations that have accumulated during the day. I have been in extremely demanding jobs during my life, and at times I'm sure the "slam me back in the chair" aspect has saved some lives. If I can be overwhelmed to the point of not thinking about the days events, it's better for everyone.

Objective (adj): Not influenced by personal feelings or opinions in considering and representing facts.

Music is all about feelings and opinions. The facts of music are tempo, measured average volume, source, frequency bandwidth, genre, vocal or instrumental, etc. - mostly the things we ignore when we listen to our favorite tracks. I would offer that we are more subjective when it comes to music.

Subjective (adj): Based on or influenced by personal feelings, tastes, or opinions.

x2..

But to put it another way, hmmm... Being objective would be Lee hooking up the analyzer to a fresh WOPL, cranking it up to 500+ watts and measuring the THD and whatnot.

Being subjective - Being the poor neighbor who got the fright of his life when the "Shponglin Phase" testing occurs, shortly thereafter...
