my gear is pretty much old school. most i have had many years, i'm now considering what i want to keep and upgrade
and then dive into some newer digital/dat stuff to go anong with the older gear.
 
Not that I am a beleiver or disbeliever, I just don't drink the cool aid. I think the map that I had was like a race car, open her up and she sings, but she isn't happy tooling around town in stop and go driving. Could just be synergy with my speakers too. I tried a few sets and while playing the louder then I liked it sounded mighty fine, but at my normal listening levels it seem to be lugging along.

Thanks Joe, that is the type i'm would like to find, as i don't require a phono input for my Win strain gauge phono
cartridge, just a aux( high level?) input. I can even run this cartridge direct,
I have A Mcintosh c28 and a Carver c4000, and really don't care for the sound of either of those.
Also a Pl 4000 and a crown ic150 both needing work

Good analogy, if you can't use the horsepower, don't buy the car. It has nothing to do with Kool-Aid. People that want these amps open them up and smoke the tires off the rims

Get a Direct box w/ attenuator pad. The one I have sitting next to me has a noisefloor of almost -100dB which is near as good as you can get w/ zero coloring. Unfortunately, you need two for stereo

Mike, youn wring it out to your hearts content!! That's why it's out there. Everybody's ears are not the same. And If I'm asking someone to spend close to 2K for sme state of the art amplification, a home audition is only fair...

Exactly and I love drag racing, and big amps. I think most good amps sound about the same at low volume, but that has
to do with the efficiency of the speaker. Pure class a amps sound real good at low volume. My Dahlquist are very
inefficient and sound just ok at low volume, so I just switch to smaller efficient speakers for low volume times.
I did drink the Electric Kool-Aid off of Ken Kesey's bus however in 1966 :love7:

The lower the volume the less bass and treble the human ear/brain perceives in relation to the midrange frequencies. Your never going to hear what a WOPL (or any high power amp) can do unless you mash the gas pedal

I am just not from the same mold as some of you as I am not trying to recreate a live concert with my home stereo. I am more into hearing the instruments, vocals and subtle nuances. Sure I sometimes like to open her up and rattle the walls and feel the percussion for my favorite passage. Unfortunately or fortunately that happens maybe once a month for minute or two kinda the way the wife likes it. :roll:

Ron, not really true as it's more of a frequency response thing of the ears as you say, but depending on efficiecy and spl's an amp should give you a good idea what is different about it from another at the same SPL. The one thing a WOPL will do is hilite shortcomings in other parts of your system...

I with ya web. I do open mine up a lot during day. But when wife is home it's not like that at all. I am a real listener also. It just happens that my current rig all works pretty damn well at that. But that's my system in my enviroment also.when I really get to open her up I get tons of swirl and bounce off the plywood celing and concrete walls. I really need to move to a smaller space or get some stuff up to help the bounce/swirl factor. So really I am on your side lol. But my Jessica blows away all my earlier gear.

I agree with that lee. The amp is the last step. And the more pieces to the puzzle muddy it up in the end I think

I don't mind low power levels Webby, it's just that I can't sit between my speakers to enjoy it for any length of time, I am constantly doing something and low power situations just don't work for me if I am two rooms away or in the garage. I can't think of a time where I could actually sit down and listen to a complete record or cd at low levels. Hope you did not think I was poking you in the eye or anything :laughing5:

At low power levels, the cheap ass 135wpc Sony amp in the garage sounds great... until you turn it up and then you see the limitations of no headroom. The Bose 501's I run with it are pretty efficient. Even the SX-626 and Tandberg 3030 sound great low but inch that volume up and all you hear is an amplifier section struggling

I rarely sit in one spot either as life rarely affords me enough time to sit and listen for any length of time. I have my system loud enough so I can hear it wherever I am, but not so loud that It is annoying in the main room. If I miss something good I backup and replay it. Sometimes I will play the same song three times in a row, but I rarely listen to a whole album or even half an album from the same artist in one listening session.
