Leave the big volume knobs all the way to the right and use your pre and crank that bitch. You will hear when it comes alive. And that particular amp needs to be left on for 2 days before it really gives ya all it has in the sonics area!!! The FC's added a lot more low end from what I've noticed. Wider soundstage and overall midrange is tighter and more musical.
I prefer to go direct from the player to the amp - less circuitry = better sound [well, usually]. Also, I like how the gain knobs ramp up the volume very gradually, a feature always appreciated, especially at these power levels. On the downside, the hugely heavy power trannie is on the left, and I have to handle that side with my weaker left hand. Audio designers should keep such things in mind. Next time I power it up, I plan to have it on the Kill-A-Watt, to see just how much juice it pulls.

As to sonics, I washed dishes this morning, and as I used to do in Carlsbad, I put on Shopping by the 3Mustaphas3. Good tunes! About halfway through, I realized that this rig sounded not much better than my old "Crazy Heck-Speriment" rig, consisting of the JVC MX-1 with Mission 70's in place of the stock full-range speakers [subs still operating]. Yeah, it sounds better, but it's more of a flavor thing, with the WOPL + Vandersteens sounding more mellow than the MX-1 + Missions, which were a touch overbright, especially if cranked. If nothing else, this loan may just make me very content with what I have. I think I'm underwhelmed that I'm not overwhelmed...

Never heard of a JVC-MX1 and IIRC, Mission 70s are bookshelf speakers? I had Mission 77's about 10 years ago, not bad speakers but the Vega's I have now would easily pound them into the ground

I would say that when I had it in my possession when the volume was cranked it sound good, but since I listen a lower volume levels my other amps seem to be better suited to the partial power band. I normally only listen to power outputs from 1 to maybe 5 watts or so. Keep the amp attenuators cranked to the max and use your preamp to control the volume.

Hey Laz.
What are you using for a source? Cd player? What is a JVC-MX1 ? Never heard of it.
The mission 70's: are those little bookshelf speakers?
What model Vandies are you trying to Skynard? You need to max the gain knobs and bring up the preamp
or cd direct volumn till you can hear the dynamics man.
CAUTION: That amp will sacrifice those Vandies to the WOPL Gods!!

Source: Blu-Ray player.

JVC MX-1: Made from about 1991 to 1991, it was a fairly unattractive-looking compact stereo. It had tuner, two cassette decks, CD player, amp and speakers in a low-profile package. The best part was the amp, which had a remote volume control, electronic equalizer (no pots!), bi-amping, and cooling by means of an ingenious bellows. The speakers had two full-rangers, and an internal sub. With a good external source and better speakers connected instead of the full-rangers, it sounded quite good. They cost $1,000 back in the day, no small sum.

Mission 70's: Yes, bookshelves, with 6.5 inch woofers, but with the right amp, they can BASS.

Vandies: 2C's. I had them jury-rigged with home-made jumpers, due to a lack of banana plugs. Today, I did it up right, and it made a very real difference, tho I am usually skeptical of Better-Sound-thru-Wire.

OK, OK, I'll try the WOPL at max and attenuate with a pre. This had better work!

The amp might not have synergy with your speakers and listening levels. I have a feeling it isbest suitedfor CV,s and serious cranking, but perhaps not refined enough for low level listening._

We have disbelievers among us. Lee maybe it's time to bring it home and fc it and send it back out. The fc IMO is awesome at any listening level. It has all aspects. Soundstage, bass response , detail, clean and clear, separation. A pre plays a big role in painting the picture also. Yeah I have cerwins but the only thing cerwin is cabs and woofers everything else is custom high dollar shit. And this rivals the 6 grand Cary that was hooked up to them when I picked them up. Now the 6k modwright pre painted a crazy picture to it. I loved that preamp.

Well I'm so close that laz he can just send to me so I can spend some time alone and do my listening tests.
I have another stock 700pl II , a mac and a crown amp, quick silver tube amps , many preamps, tt, cd and
Dahlquist, bose 901, and altec votts. I plan on putting it to a good listen. I have Had Phase Linears since my first 400
back in 1974 driving Infinity Sevro Statik 1's , I"m a believer..........................
But its up to Lee if he wants it back right away, cool.

It blew away my 1500$ jolida 502 tube amp in all aspects except the warm color off tubed stuff. This amp is clear as a bell. Try a CD player or something direct into it and u can see what just the amp sounds like with no other components to change it up also!!
im super happy with Jessica the fc version but the pig still sounds really good IMO !!

You have some good gear brother, have you considered bi-amping or tri amping? nice way to control the power to
each driver range. An example would be the wopl for mid low and the jolida on the high side. nice way to control the
skynard effect.
hey did ya get that pump running?

I also like source direct to the amp, any pre I have used has colored or altered the sound. The only thing I don't like is the pain in the ass factor (switching sources etc.) so I have been using an Acurus RL-11 lately and it colors the sound the least of all the other pre's I have used. Direct is still best however.

I agree Joe direct is the best. Joe how old is the Acurus? Affordable?

That's why u always hear me talk about that modwright pre and the musical fidelity m1vinl. Those 2 components are the only 2 things I've heard that I absolutely love there color and image.. But I haven't heard tons of pres or phono pres either. I've been seeing live music my whole life and using best buy digital crap...

It is about 15 or so years old Mike, been gathering dust for a while so I decided to pull it out and put into rotation. Still works great and colors the sound little. It is a very basic pre but is made with very nice components. No phono stages at all. Meant to use an external phono pre if you need one.
