    Head azimuth

Furthermore, if I remember correctly it was Aiwa that used some polarized caps in bipolar configuration (the known way) at some decks. If I remember correctly... As for HUHs, well... my self I'm quite shy and go the formal way. Phoenix is exactly the opposite! And I enjoy it to the fullest...

    What cassette deck ?

My favorite: Technics RS-B965 modified under Alex's recipe! The "want to have": Pioneer CT-F1250

    Head groove-o-mania

Exactly! It's a microcrystal substance (like a polishing paste) in a hard form so it is easy to stay on the highly rotating brush. There are different types of soap (measured in grades, if I remember correctly - my dad retired 17 years ago), according to the machine and the metal to be polished...

    Head groove-o-mania

Vince, I know that lapping film IS the way to go, that's why I don't suggest my way to anybody. But I like improvising. And since my way works for me, I'm ok! By the way, the majority of the heads at manufacturing are lapped on a similar way. They give the final contour with special sanding...

    Head groove-o-mania

Little late (other projects running). During my first ever lapping, I tried the head at every step. I started with a wet 400 silicone paper (very scratchy) and ended with a wet 2000. After the 1200, no difference in frequency response. It virtually restored the FR of the head. And the 1200...

    HX PRO

Yes, Maxell XL-IIS are my best. My Technics love them. Along with the simpler XL-II, they make the most accurate recordings compared to the original source. TDK SA-XS comes second but very hard to find and very expensive.

PB response and how to fix it

No, I didn't made the resistors mod on the HX pro. I need to find some time to make it on all my decks. I know how challenging is to tune a different type of head on the recording side. That's why I'd only consider to replace the 965's head since Technics has both versions and the parts...

PB response and how to fix it

I would definitely like to add an amorphous head on one of my 965 even by chance I could get any. But with the rarity these heads come and today prices, I think this will be just high expectations!!! An off-topic question: having both RS-B965M and RS-B965MF do you think the M (just oem...

    Marantz SD9000

Well, indeed that's impressive! For the history, I came late buying the deck. It flew some hours after I firstly saw it. Never mind... Ah!, the sd9000 had two versions: one with dbx and one without. The said long gone deck was without...

    Marantz SD9000

Hello! Recently, I saw an ad for the said Marantz in need of belts, according to the owner. It's offered at 130€. I know nothing about this deck other than it's a very rare, late '70s deck. Is it worth it to buy it and try to bring it back to life? Sonically, how does it feel? I'm...

    Mobile Fidelity scandal

As long as they are using high resolution digital formats, I guess it's ok. Very few people (if any) can hear the difference between a 192/24 and a pure analog track. The point is if such high resolution format was used or they went with lower?

When labels stopped major vinyl publishing?

I'm collecting vinyls from the 70's & 80's. Mostly rock and metal. I want to complete the full discography of some artists I love. Most of them were active and producing in the 90's or even in 00's. But unfortunately, I can't find the later albums on vinyl. So, when the old, pure analog vinyl...

    Sharp MD-MT20H. Welcome me, minidisc!

Fortunately, the Sharp operates with 2 AA NiMH batteries and with an easy trick it can charge them, too.

    Sharp MD-MT20H. Welcome me, minidisc!

Jim, you made a good point. One of the drawbacks the earlier decks have is the absence of the ability to connect with a pc. My Sharp can't. The later formats can but arrived quite late. So, anything written on the disk, even if on digital form can't been transferred as is. I would prefer a more...
