Torque Spec for WOPL Backplane Transistors

This information may be buried in an obscure post, but is there a consensus on the proper torque for the Output Transistor 6-32 Hex Socket Screws in the kit supplied by Joe? If the spec is in the instructions, I can't find it. This source http://www.federalscrewproducts.com/torque-chart.htm...

    Hearing Aids...

I have been told during a recent checkup (that included a hearing test) that I am a candidate for hearing aids in both ears. My Audiogram is not very pretty. In a perfect world it would be flat, showing no hearing loss across the frequency spectrum. Mine takes a dive at 3kHz and another dive at...

    We are #4!

In this article from April 12th 2019, "The 12 Most Significant Power Amplifiers of All Time" the PL400/PL700 came in at #4! The article is full of snobbery, but gives some valuable insights and history into how far we have come with power amps. Interestingly, the older the amp, the higher the...

What To Use Under The Power Transistors?

I have heard it called Wakefield Compound, zinc oxide, silicone paste, or Dow Corning 340. Others use plain mica or Silipads. What do you use and why???

Why Are There Electrolytic Capacitors On My Inputs?

What do you guys think of the way Great American Sound designed a phono stage circuit with electrolytic caps in the sound path? The circuit calls out (4) 68uF/3v caps, but my pre-amplifier has (4) 100uF/10v caps.

    Time To Change A Resistor

Found that Someone Before Me (SBE), had changed the output resistor in my HP Function Generator. The output is 600 Ohms to be consistent with other test equipment inputs. This resistor is 620 Ohms and much larger than it needs to be. I'm guessing 2 Watts, and HP calls for 1/2 Watt. Mouser just...

Does Anyone Have Any BNC Cables or Connectors?

The term BNC comes from the type of connector and the inventor's names - Bayonet Neill-Concelman (BNC). Paul Neill of Bell Labs was a major influence, Concelman worked at Amphenol. They were working on a military connector that was simple to use. The connector is referenced in MIL-STD-348...

    I'm Buying a "Mule" PL400

Hey everyone, I need a chassis to hold newly assembled WOA upgrade control boards. So, I am bidding on this PL400: https://www.ebay.com/itm/PHASE-LINEAR-400-STEREO-POWER-AMPLIFIER/143219365566?hash=item21588a16be:g:tysAAOSwFdZct5l3&autorefresh=true Please don't bid against me, as I cannot...

    'Phones

These are my "go to" headphones. Never heard anything else sound so crisp and clear. Of course, I am using a headphone amp of my own design (no expense spared components). I probably need to sell the headphones. $360.00 or so on Amazon. The headphone amp is priceless; OK, maybe $100. Mark

    Downsizing

Hello All, I have attached a list of all the audio and electronics equipment people like you might be interested in buying. I am selling the house and moving to a tiny two-bedroom residence. I will still work on the Phase Linear / White Oak Audio amps but probably only one at a time. I have...

White Oak/ Phase Linear Troubleshooting Guide

If the bias is too high despite the position of R20 on both channels (rare) check to see if the board is grounded between D11 and D12 at 5L1. If the bias is high one channel, check for zero volts on the base of Q6 at "B-L" or "B-R". Then check for 1.6 volts on the collector of Q6 at "C-L" or...

White Oak/ Phase Linear Troubleshooting Guide

Lee, what was the indication that made you say you lost bias on one of the channels? I'm thinking that we could put together a pretty good troubleshooting guide based on our experiences. Using the military approach of 1) checking for good input, 2) verifying bad/no output, 3) selecting a point...

    My Wiring Shortcut

I found a way to make it easier and faster to change out a WOA board. I timed myself and I can install a board in 2 minutes (or so). I used a hot glue gun after the wires were in place and dressed. I could have done the same with black lacing but I wanted to play with hot glue.

PL400 Faceplate on ebay for $$$

I saw this POS on ebay and wondered if our machinist friend has ever cut some faceplates for us? http://www.ebay.com/itm/Vintage-Phase-Linear-400-Amplifier-Faceplate-/200869592118?pt=Vintage_Electronics_R2&hash=item2ec4c2bc36 Mark

    The "Critical" Capacitor

Looking at the schematic of the Rev C WOAPL board (actually, I was dreaming about it last night, scary) I wonder if changing C7L and C7R would make a difference. These are the only capacitors in the full signal path, so they have to be critical, right? These caps are called out on Joe's sheet...

Bidding on eBay item #130801334355 Phase Linear Direct Coupled 400 "Needs Repair"

I thought I might get this one, it went down to 10 sec with my bid of $99.00. I don't want to bet against you guys so I didn't chase it. It went for $118.50. I hope one of us got it. Mark

What is the Opposite of Voltage Sag?

Hey Lee, I was thinking devious thoughts. Ya know how we like to find "hot" transformers, and how the output of the amps will drop if the line level goes below 117 VAC... What if we hook up the power line cord to our VARIAC and raise the power, to say, 130 VAC. I would think that would be...

Repairing The Venerable Crown DC 300

Joe, I guess this is mainly for you. As I re-immerse myself back into the electronics, the Crown DC 300 beckons to me. I have a soft hum in the left channel and a loud 60 Hz hum in the right channel. I'm suspecting the power supply caps because they are original (everything in the amp appears...
