Nor'easter my butt? Where is the storm from Hell?

Its not entirely or even mostly the younger generation that is causing the current state of retardation. At this point its their parents. They are the ones running the show and screwing the people my age (born in '81) for their future. To be fair though, my generation has more than its share...

    Glen's 700 series II build

Ah, yours uses the eye tube to indicate leakage. Mine has a neon lamp for leakage, and the eye tube is for value and power factor. Mine won't measure inductance either. One cool thing you can do with one of these old guys is use them for leakage testing on transformers. Wind it up to the...

FS:Phase Linear (Bob Carver) Gear collection

THey are fixable. I fixed one, though it was not a Series II. it worked fine, but other than looking cool with all the switches and knobs it wasn't that amazingly good or bad. I wouldn't pay much for one at any rate.

Nor'easter my butt? Where is the storm from Hell?

People down this way were having a shit fit about it. I got so much snow here that in spots I can't see my grass through it. They put all of NJ into a state of emergency yesterday, and cancelled school for most of the state and northern Delaware as well. They didn't cancel the travel ban...

    Glen's 700 series II build

Those old cap checkers are surprisingly accurate as long as the internal multiplier caps are right. Does yours measure leakage directly, or is it the neon lamp go / no-go type thing? My old Solar has the lamp. I want to say it comes on at 2ma but that may not be right. I had it figured out...

    Glen's 700 series II build

I worked on a 4000 preamp. Sounded OK, but what a disaster of physical construction. Lots of gee-gaws that you don't need too. Not my cup of tea, but I like very simple preamps.

ALPS balance pot in PL3300 Series II

Balance pots are usually linear. It will matter considerably. If you put a log pot where a linear goes, you'll be "centered" about 90% of the way over rather than in the middle. On a 100k linear pot, middle is 50k end to end. On a log pot, its more like 10k to one end and 90k to the other end.

ALPS balance pot in PL3300 Series II

Make sure the wires or solder joints on it aren't cracked. I know zip about this unit but a broken connection will do the same thing as a flaky pot. If it tests OK out of circuit I'd be inclined to look for bad connections on the board.

Derek92994's 700 Ser II White Oak conversion

Ah. I've seen those funky slightly over-long fuses before. Also might depend what it had originally. My friend's 700 S2 took shorter fuses than my Pro 700 does. Mine runs a 3AG type, and his takes whatever designation is the same diameter but shorter. I'm fine with mine having the longer...

Derek92994's 700 Ser II White Oak conversion

I was joking :) I've had busted springs in fuse holders before. Fixed one with a piece of spring out of a pen. It got the job done, but it was a bit of a hack.

Derek92994's 700 Ser II White Oak conversion

I've never done the foil without a fuse. It needs to be there to form the aluminum properly :) I did have a friend catch his car on fire with that once. He was using the foil from cig packs, which is paper backed. The radio shorted out for the umpteenth time and the "fuse" went up in...

    Ben's (BubbaH's) Phase Linear 400 WOPL conversion

I definitely get that. There are some days where I'm just not in the right state of mind to work on things involving electricity. I remember when I was wiring my shed / workshop. I worked on it for several days in a row with no problem. I came home from work one night and went to put an...

    Lets talk Pre-amps

I have a simple tube preamp that lives in a Dyna PAS2 case. Almost nobody actually has a Dynaco preamp anymore, but lots of those boxes exist. This one is a simple 12AU7 gain stage per channel with the other half of each tube working as a cathode follower. Very simple, doesn't color the...

Check these cheesy F&^%$ dicks out!!!

I've seen some cables constructed in ways that I'd consider to be crappy, but people swore by them. Then again, when you think about it, telephone systems ran miles and miles of nothing more than twisted pair wire and landline phones worked fine. The twist will tend to cancel out noise...

Looking for a Saba cabinet stereo.

Saba made some of the best German radios at that time. I like German tube gear, but its not the most friendly thing to work on. It is very German under the hood too. Tight quarters, overly complex switching mechanisms, and somehow excellent performance out of what would appear to be mediocre...

    National NV-850-A Hi-Fi Stereo VCR (1984 Model)

Something about that has a Matsushita / Panasonic look to it. Here in the US, National was a company mostly known for shortwave radios in the boatanchor era.

Broken eBay 700B - Now what?

Its funny how big that cap used to be. I've got some mylar caps from about 1961 in service yet, and they are easily 5x that size for the same kind of value and voltage. On the other hand, they are still fine. Tough dielectric mylar is.

WHAT HAS WHITE OAK DONE NOW??????????????

you could extrapolate it based on power level. Double the power would be another 3 db down, assuming all else is equal and it doesn't bring the noise floor up with a different amp config or with more power.
