Wow, sounds like its going to get me evicted :laughing9: I should be able to fit it in here somewhere. Will remove some components to make it fit.
it won't fit unless you have them set fairly forward.
standard home entertainment units etc are 17" (or less) wide, and a pl with ears is 19"
plus those home units won't handle that sort of weight and will bow.... and possibly collapse, especially if it's an Ikea type of construction.

That centre part is 26 inches wide. This unit is pretty solid, and a bitch to move. If it doesn't work out I'll organise something. Will re-inforce it if need be. With the power supplies being external and on the ground at the back this should lower the weight some as well.

So I have to ask.... Lee, do you put these things together from carcasses you have lying around at home? Whats the total cost to rebuild a 4 or 7 hundo? If that is something you'd like kept confidential feel free to PM me with that. I have to say, im becoming more and more interested in these big dog PL amps you put together.

Ben.

A little of both Bubba. Some from stuff I've bought because it was a bargain at the time, some given to me or the owner of one sends it to me. Nothing secretive here. If you supply the unit for conversion 500-800 depending on how far you want to go. If I supply the donor unit , that plus what I have in it.

These amps , after the White Oak upgrades are WORLD class in certain specifications. The SNR on the fully comp 400 here is 107.2DB UNWEIGHTED, A weighted IEC I suspect will be way close 120db, simply fantastic stuff. These amps lasted 40 years and longer with cheesy PCB's and poor wire management, Joe's state of the art PCB's and other improvements will take them even longer into the future. My son's grandson will be listening to the amp great-great grandpa laatsch55 built back in '14.

If for some reason we can't run the pair of stacked 400's I finished stripping the original 700 chassis. Jani will bead blast and paint the bugger. That's as far down as yu can take one. D2, if we go this way It'll still have separate power supplies and be fully comp. Just a little more work is all. Either way she's gonna be spiffy and an earthshaker....

I have a spare NOS PL400 S1 chassis (only) still in the plastic bag if that's of use to anyone....
(here in Australia, but it shouldn't weigh much for post to anywhere.)
Any interest, and I'll pack it and check with the PO for costs.

By a stroke of pure genious...

Or more like a stroke of pure serendipity...

Lee, to do what you are looking to do, I think you will find that you can use the generously sized test point holes from one of the vertical sets of backplane boards to bridge (wire) one to the other.

You will use only ONE predriver which will give you the ability to drive 6 outputs in the driver positions on the upper and lower half of each channel. That will be a total of 14 devices on each channel, 7 upper, 7 lower. More driver capability than the 700 has.

Look at the schematic for the backplane board and you will see what I am talking about.

This should be able to be done in a very clean and neat fashion.

This is bizarre, I was just looking at the mule this morning and was about to e-mail you about that very same thing. My hangup was what happens to the driver on the upper board.

OK, that was the last tidbit I needed. I was going to reverse the top board to have both tops looking at each other, the jumpers needing to be no longer than 3.5-4 inches.

The chassis will not align if you do that though Lee...

I am, the 700 heatsinks I had laying around. Same orientation on the layout though.
