Besides a good tape path cleaning for the capstans and pinch rollers, it will be up to the technician to remedy the tape skew.

When I get a "new" deck, my sacrificial tape for testing is a pre-recorded Michael Bolton - and it has lasted a long time. Damn!

It's good to see your NAD 6300 arrive and in action. I have a few vintage Marantz components I've been collecting for an all-Marantz stereo system - excluding speakers.

Nando.
Very nice.

I tried rejuvenating the pinch rollers with naphtha, but I think it may be one of the motors that is flat spotting, because it just stops randomly. Seems to be more prevalent TDK SA 90 tapes that came from the same batch as far as I remember. It plays Maxell XL II tapes all the way through, which makes me wonder is it really the motor, or is it something in the tape path?

edit: it seems after it heats up that it does this more often, and it is doing it even on Maxell tapes now. Sounds like the classic motor problem, and I’m looking to return this because it was supposed to be serviced. My technical ability is not there to fix this myself.

Sorry to hear that. Is the deck's capabilities of real interest to you, though? If so, I'd consider getting it fixed and ask the seller to contribute to the repair. Bird in hand and all that as its appearance is good...

Hi, yes and that’s exactly what I’m trying to weigh out.

With the limited experience I’ve had with the 6300 I don’t think it sounds as good as my A&D GX-Z9100. Of course that could change if it had a good service, but what’s it going to cost to get it in good working order is the question. I’m thinking the motor rebuilt, and full service is probably going to be in the neighborhood of $500, and possibly more.

My Z9100 gets a bad rap on some of the tape deck sites, as it’s basically an Akai deck, but my experience differs, it’s performance is pretty spectacular in my opinion.

Thanks for the advice, and I am am going to definitely consider asking him for a rebate to help with repairs.

Eh, I grow weary of internet heroes these days. I've never seen one in the wild, but that Z9100 looks to have all the capability I'd ever want. Good luck with whatever you decide - it appears that other than the potential cost, you win either way.

99.85% of the internet reviewers of this crap have never recoreded a live performance and done an A-B test of the recording to be able to have any authority whatsoever.

A recorded should record, faithfully, the original material.

This is exactly what Mark Levinson went through so much trouble to make his own recordings and cut his own records so that he KNEW that what was being reproduced sounded like the actual live recording he did.

This is the brilliance of Mark that so many fail to understand.

I heard back from the retired NAD tech. He agreed it’s probably a bad reel motor, and suggested that I try to find someone with the new one. He stated that rebuilds are not reliable. It just sounded like he just didn’t want to mess with it.

It’s going to be an expensive repair and even if I got half of the money for the repair, I don’t think I’m willing to spend any money on this.

Hopefully I can get refunded.

This was a major impetus behind my home recording studio project all those years ago, though I didn't have 0.1% of Mark's resources. It was still quite instructive, especially a couple of the concerts I recorded in our music hall in the Fine Arts Center.
