Meh - there is not much to talk about, not nearly as colorful as some others' backgrounds. As a kid I was always the one who was taking apart the toys on Christmas, rather than play with them. So I've always been intrigued more with what happened under the cover than anything else. Grew up working on lawn mowers in my younger days - learned a lot about the inner workings of engines and such. Built a ton of Heathkit, PAIA, Dynaco, SWTPC and other kits - stuff like that. That got me interested in computers, built an 8080 based system out of HS, learned coding in assembler and ended up at IBM as a mainframe systems test tech in late 70s. Retired from there after nearly 4 decades of movement through the business.

I have expanded my passion for mechanical things to driving on-track and have been a certified instructor since 2005...I've driven and instructed at nearly all the road tracks in the Northeast, a few in Eastern Canada as well. Prepared my old BMW myself - suspension, engine, safety equipment, aerodynamics, etc. It has been a lot of fun taking people from incompetence to well-prepared amateur racers.

Years later all that antiquated stereo stuff I accumulated in those days needs working on - and luckily we've got access to talents to so many people on this forum that help fuel that passion. This is a cool place to hang out and learn from others - as well as give-back when we can. Couple pics of Dynaco amp and pre-amp I originally built in the late 70s ... recently refurbished.

Did I mention I enjoy a good beer and excellent single malt scotches ?!

Awesome Gene, your story really put a smile on my face :happy2:.
If ya been ridin' a while, you're gonna have stories. I have many miles on my Pan, been coast to coast several times.
Built to the hilt (big cam, lots of compression, etc, back in the day, when we could get good gas). They are a true hemi, so
flame propagation was always an issue, now it is built to run on today's gas (mild cam, lower compression, milder jetting, and hardened valve seats.) I never double plugged the heads but have done that many for others.
I have been building bikes over 50 years, and still feel 17 whenever I get one out in the Spring or fire up a new build.....just like cranking the WOPL 700b !!!!!

you can still buy 140 octane avgas in places....getting harder to come by....the more common one is 101 octane...is what i burned in my planes....
i did have the stc to burn car gas in the taylorcraft...i never did do it...it just didnt make sense to me...at one time we were paying around 8 bucks per gallon years ago...the bellanca had 66 gallons of fuel on board....500 to fill up...thats why most weekend aviators kept the 65 hp puddle jumpers around so you could afford to go for that weekend 100 dollar hamburger....each
or play airplane poker....that is a lot of fun....
didnt you ever play the poker run on your bikes....?????
a great way to kill a weekend!!!!
just be sure you have stellite valves....
i used to keep avgas at a little airport...i asked the local cops to keep an eye out for guys with a siphon hose...he said not to worry....
he could easily find the thief...he would be the one with the burnt valves....lol
true story...

Morning Gene, you been eating those coffee beans already today?

Have you ever seen this document?

Control board debug instructions

The instructions below apply to the White Oak Audio Design PL14_20 Control PCBs. The Pad numbering cited is specific to the White Oak Audio Design PCBs with the Pad numbers silkscreened on the board. These same tips can apply to the original QUASI-COMP Phase Linear control boards but the user will have to do some schematic work to understand how to apply it to the particular vintage of Phase Linear board that is involved.

These are quick checks you can perform on your control board to ensure it is regulating properly.

Quasi-Comp Configuration, all PCB artwork revisions

  • Pad references that follow will include L or R and will depend on the channel you are testing. The L an R are left off of Pad and component references for simplicity.
  • Detach and tape off wires going to Pads 9, 8, 6, 4, and 3.
  • Tack a jumper wire between Pad 3 and 12.
  • Tack a jumper wire between Pad 8 and 6.
  • Tack a 47 ohm 1/2W resistor between Pads 9 and 6.
  • Tack a second 47 ohm 1/2W resistor between Pads 4 and 6.
  • Bring up on DBT and Variac and ensure that the output on Pad 6 is zero or no more than 15 mV (much lower for RevE and G1).
  • Check that you have B+ on Pad 11.
  • Check that you have B- on Pad 12
  • Ensure that the voltage across each of the 47 ohm 1/2W resistors is less than 2V and the voltage on the 47 ohm 1/2W resistor tacked between Pads 9 and 6 varies as you adjust the bias potentiometer.
  • If all good on the control board search for your problem on the backplane or backwall.
  • If not all good on the control board, use this configuration to debug what is wrong with the control board.
Full-Comp Configuration, PCB artwork Revision D, E and G1

  • This set of instructions assumes you have the White Oak Audio Backplane Kit installed.
  • Pad references that follow will include L or R and will depend on the channel you are testing. The L an R are left off of Pad and component references for simplicity.
  • Detach and tape off wires going to Pads 9, 8, 6, 4, and PNP
  • Tack a jumper wire between Pad 8 and 6 and 4.
  • Tack a 47 ohm 1/2W resistor between Pads 9 and 6.
  • Tack a second 47 ohm 1/2W resistor between Pads PNP and 6.
  • Bring up on DBT and Variac and ensure that the output on Pad 6 is zero or no more than 15 mV (much lower for RevE and G1).
  • Check that you have B+ on Pad 11.

  • If all good on the control board search for your problem on the backplane or backwall.
  • If not all good on the control board, use this configuration to debug what is wrong with the control board.

workin on it....i am enjoying my third cup....thanks...
got a new batch on the bush.....but, thats a real pain to make your own coffee....maria does it when the berries are ripe....and we only have 4 bushes....so we only get a kilo or two of coffee from our own process....but, it is surprisingly good...we drink our coffee very strong...

i have not read the details until now...but, i was aware that your driver board swings both ways...
thanks for sharing...what i was wondering was if the point to point back plane could be converted to work with the new transistors and new driver board....but, as i understand...you do not publish any information on how to do that....one member has done it...but, he is much more educated in electronic design than i am....and without explicit information....or support....not a good fit for me...
i will save my salvaged parts for another project another day....or not...
time to pull the trigger whenever you are ready to ship...
thank you again...

y'all may forget...i am in a foreign country....not using my native tongue....i am in the country side...not even a hand full of gringos here....
biggest motorcycle here is a chinese version of a honda 250....most are from 110 to 200 ccs...as they are cheap to operate...ever heard of a freedom brand....me neither...very few have papers...or inspection stickers...and scatter like rats when the trafficos are near....lol
they have their own dodge the traffic police group on whatsapp....a sight to see...
vintage stereo??...that is something you see on tv in the old reruns...or youtube...
there is a ham dx pedition that comes here every year for other operators worldwide for hams to make contact with the country of costa rica...its a rare country to work...
they always borrow my towers and equipment....lots of fun to go and do that with them...
its nice to sit down and exchange with all of you on the things of interest we all share...
george, i will send you and address for the boards...i collect...
sniff...i ordered those transistors (i fried one driver)...got two on the way...
BUT, I JUST ORDERED A WOPL KIT...COMPLETE....DOWN TO THE SIL PADS...
LOL
that should cover all of the bases...and either make everybody happy or p*ss everybody off....
either way is a win/win....
thanks guys...
