What pre's are you typically building? I have a PL2000, 3000, and 3300 that I bought with the intention of merely recapping with direct replacements with upgraded voltage. I also have a C1, a C2, and an Acurus RL11 that I believe I picked up on Joe's recommendation. I want to build two or three systems and then sell the rest.

Can't lose with the RL-11

The C-1 and C2 are also excellent candidates with the C1 being the better of the 2.

I don't care for the PL Preamps and avoid them.

The best way to build a WOPL is to build it on a piece of paper which is cheap if a mistake is made. Then go out and find your core and order parts. Who cares how long it takes to find the perfect candidate to build, this amp should be built to last the rest of your life and not rushed. I see many rushed projects come from the pages of our site and it is a pain to look at some of them. Coming up with a sub-par amp to use would never be an issue as long as we take our time, ask the questions first, and skip the hairbrained ideas like mine. :)

That 3300 Ser II is a good pre, but it needs some work in the phono section and all those ceramic caps need swapped for wima polypros...or mica for the lower values...

Not in the same league as the Acurus but adequate...

Glad to hear VSAT! I like it here :)

Last night I successfully completed my conversion from 4 fin to 8 fin ;-) I applied a thin and even layer of silicone heat sink thermal grease to the large and small flat surface where both sets of the sinks meet the chassis. There was the slightest bit of overflow into the transistor mounting holes, but that cleaned up fairly easily with a handful of q-tips. I reinstalled the bottom row of transistors and called it a night. Still have not powered on with the bottom row installed. The anticipation is killing me. Going to take my time and triple check things along the way. I plan on keeping it forever and then passing it on to my son, so no sense rushing it (thanks for the perspective Sniffer).

Lee - this might be a question for another thread on another day, but I intend to play 50% vinyl and 50% hi-res streaming on these through my BlueSound Node 2i. What upgrades can you suggest in the phono stage on the 3300? I would like to order the recommended parts and get that work in the queue.

My only complaint on the RL-11 is no built in phono stage. I don't currently have an external phono pre.

You will get better performance with an external phono preamp + RL11 than just about any built in phono pre.

From their site: "Mani 2 is simply the highest-performance affordable phono preamp, period." Sold. It's on the way.

Thanks for the suggestion! I was leaning towards the Pro-ject Phono Box S2 to pair with my Pro-ject Debut Carbon with Ortofon Blue cart, but I'll give this Mani 2 a try.

I'm still interested in hearing about the phono stage upgrades on the 3300... I'm going to recap it anyway. May as well look to upgrade performance while I'm in there. This Mani will pair with my RL-11, but I'll still need a setup in the basement that's vinyl ready.

I’m still after an rl-11. But I may end up home brewing Pete Millett’s low mu tube pre, I got almost enough crap around to throw one together…..

This was my solution. It sounded excellent before I did the mods to it and even though they are now/were made in cheena, they used excellent quality internal parts. I was impressed with the quality and it worked WAY better than the ciggie pack little boxes. I spent $100 on some upgrade parts and the Mod which is posted on the net by some phono guru, went in quick and I have been super happy. There are a couple in nice shape right now on the bay. I plan on getting another because of the success I had. I have the mod article with parts list too. The one for $168 looks like it's in prime condition.

This way you can snag an RL-11 and just add the Rotel. Even the Phono Guru was impressed by the quality. I've done a couple of these for customers and they have all been happy.

Love great audio, beermaking and pyrotechnics
So, how would you rate in comparison the Carver C1 vs Rotel and R-11 combo? Always wondering if there is much appreciable difference above what I'm running (Shure V15-III - C1 - WOPL).

Lol, you guys are bad influences. I just bought the Rotel too. I'll do a A/B and sell/return whichever one loses the head-to-head.

Sniff - do you have that Phono Guru upgrade instruction set handy? I just did a quick search and didn't immediately find it, so naturally I gave up.

I'll send the link later. I'm rewiring the rider I got for free that some goof wired.
