Not worth getting back, Lee. They're a lot smaller than I remember them being.

My mistake...sorry. I saw the note " I Need You Ron" under his av and just assumed. Shouldn't do that!

@ Northwinds... I have too much invested to get out of the hobby. And I don't even have a layout. I belong to a club. We have an open house three weekends a year and I like watching little kids eyes light up when they see it for the first time. The usual thing out of their mouths is "WOW".
That would be me, I am the keeper of Nav's ladies LMAO!!!

I had many thousands invested in HO scale, lots of brass engines etc... sold most of that stuff all but still have a lot of 60s-80s stuff. I had a crapload of pre war Lionel OO also, all long gone. I do have a few Lionel sets in the garage, nothing special, mostly early to mid 70s I believe

One set I would not get rid of is the biggest Tyco Bicentennial set that was offered, I have a lot of good memories of the Bicentennial HO stuff from my youth

Boy there's a lot to read here. Half I understand, the other half not so much. When topics get into the technical aspects like talking about setting bias and offset and the like, I'm gone. I mean I just don't understand. Anyhow, some questions I'm hoping I'm allowed to ask. IF it turns out I'm not allowed to ask money questions, please feel free to delete or amend my post. I won't take offense. In looking, I've seen prices all over the place for 700's, both the "b's" and the series II. On ebay I check what they've sold for and they're still all over the place. 400's seem fairly plentiful while the 700's aren't. I'm pretty much decided on a 700 series II since I really like the Cylon meters, but I won't rule out a 700B because, well face it, they're awesome too! And I'm looking at the 700's sort of like muscle cars of the '70's. More horespower is better in most cases. So my first question is what would be a fair figure I can expect to pay for one that isn't beat to crap? I want one that the faceplate isn't an eyesore or anything like that unless new faceplates are available. I mean I realize these things are 40+ years old and I don't expect perfection, but I don't want an eyesore either. Next I'd like to ask since it's probably going to be made a WOPL, would it be better to get one that's not blown up? Or should I look for a nice working one. I'm guessing a working one. That leads to my next question. Can the average person with little to no electronic knowledge perform the White Oaks conversions? And I might as well go for the whole deal if I'm going to do it. No sense in being half-assed about it. OR, would I be better off having someone here do it for me. Anyhow, could someone supply a ballpark price for the upgrade plus the time and labor. Like I said, maybe these questions are inappropriate, but I'll never know if I don't ask. And last, who would do this?

New faceplates are available, between 125-200 depending on where you get it. If you are going for a full WOPLing the "working" part doesn't matter as everything is getting replaced. Expect to pay 300-500 for a cosmetically clean carcass and another 1200-1600 to convert it...

THAT MUCH? HOLY BALLS!

Well, I'm still in, I'll just have to save my pennies longer. If any of you on the off chance should ever meet my wife, well she doesn't need to know!!

Gary,

Your concerns are common. I came to this site fully intending to learn and do the White Oak conversion myself (after buying my PL400 for $200 - good working condition). While Joe includes minute details on installation I still did not feel I had the knowledge or patience to perform the conversion. Also - I did not have the appropriate test equipment, which apparently you need for full conversion, that would have added to the cost. This is where Lee and the boys come in - if you are still interested in tackling the project - patience and knowledge abounds. Lee has watched over conversions wire by wire, about the only thing he can't do is improve your soldering skills but he will give his recommendations.

I'm glad I recognized my shortcomings and turned my amp over to Lee, who promptly trashed it for a newer chassis and built me one sweet sounding WOPL.

Try and price a new 500wpc amp in todays market! <$2000 for a custom built amp, not bad in my book.

Wives will eventually find out Gary. Best to include them, you may be surprised. My wife has brought home and purchased me many goodies feeding my hobby - she kind of gets a kick out of it. I thought I was going to lose her when we were at Lee's listening to his rig....she came out with a smile (OK, I'll admit Shpongle was not her thing but made an impact on her listening) and understood what I wanted to be hearing. Really fun sitting her down and making her listen to some of the old stuff, even she admits it never sounded as good as it does coming out of a WOPL.

Thanks for the words of encouragement. I also know my limitations...and patience levels. If it were a matter of soldering in a lot of new pieces/parts, I could probably handle that. But, when I plugged it in and nothing happened...or worse...well, you get my drift. And like you said, there's the test equipment. And I doubt that a multi-meter would be the only piece needed. No, I learned a long time ago it's better to get it done right the first time by the people that know what they're doing, than to pay these same people double because you screwed it up trying to save a buck. And in the end, I'm sure you have something well worth every penny you put into it. And besides, it's a hobby and I have yet to find a hobby that isn't expensive.

That's pretty reasonable for what amounts to a state of the art amplifier....

I agree with what everybody's comments. Like I said, I'm still in and I will have one. Now all I have to do is find one and if it needs a new face, apparently taht's not an issue either. Of course I still have to save more pennies!

Welcome Gary!

I was into model railroading many years ago. I still have several large boxes full. Maybe it's time I moved that stuff on as I will never get to it again but it was fun when I did
Take it out of their boxes like I did:

(complete railroad shit shown here is mostly Minitrix and Fleischmann all in N-Scale...)

Deb and I have a lot of N scale also, mostly Mini Trix, Bachmann, Fleishmann and Peko but that stuff she wants to keep for when I make her a big coffee table with a sunken section (shatter resistant glass on top) so she can run it when friends are over

A large bulk of what I have is HO scale besides the few Lionel sets I have still kicking around. That stuff will probably be taken to the local auction house. I only plan to keep one old HO Rivarossi Hudson engine/tender and some billboard cars and a few tankers I am still fond of besides the Tyco Bicentennial set
