Nice to hear your Akai gets good use, Matt. I remember when you first bought it and it garnered a lot of attention. Your black Teac X-2000R is the one you mainly use to record on, then?

Akai GX-747
My first open-reel deck was an Akai GX-747. I sold it on consignment to fund the purchase of my Pioneer SX-1980 receiver. When I first picked it up several years ago it came with recording of the Beatles' White album. I discovered then about the capability of R2R decks. Here's a picture of it shortly before I sold it:
I did a demo recording off vinyl where it resided in the downstairs' bedroom. Click on image to play video:
Once it was cleaned up and serviced it was posted on the Innovative Audio website. I sold it with the take-up reel, NOS TDK tape, and wired remote control.
Gordon had unique "Oreo Sandwich" side panels made up for it to give it a distinctive look.

Pioneer RT-1020L
I had this deck for a short time - about three years before selling it. I bought it from a fellow TH member, Robert. He did a wonderful job in packing it properly for the long trip from Illinois to me. These are still undervalued and most Pioneer RT-707s seem to be the darlings compared to this machine. I made a number of great recordings on this deck during the time I had it and even found a few quadraphonic pre-recorded reels to play on it.

I posted this on another thread but then I realized it was a thread from 2011. Today I was given two of these Teac X2000R decks from a local university's media department who was dumping a bunch of old equipment (got a few really old Wollensak school decks) and thought I had a score, hence my screenname that I chose for this site. But, now I find out that the X2000R is not really considered a good deck but a cheapened version of an older superior one. I gotta admit I thought the plastic on the front looks chintzy (especially on the silver one) but they still look pretty cool even if they are sorta 80's styled. I have plugged them in but I haven't tried them out yet as I just got them home. They are in great cosmetic shape but the tape paths are dirty. The silver one looks like it has some really strange wobbly pattern on all the heads. I've never seen anything like it, my main deck is a Teac X700R which has been flawless since the 80's (not even a new belt). The heads on the x2000R are orange but otherwise look the same, but there is hardly any wear noticeable on the X700R but what is there is smooth and even. On the xilver X2000R the wear looks really strange, almost as if a skinnier tape was played on it (even though that's not possible). Is there any way to fix this or should I just junk it as a parts deck? I gotta admit they look better in pictures than in person, I'm more a fan of the all-metal older Teacs or especially the top of the line amazing Pioneers on this thread.
