Just gave it a good vacuum in all areas, will do it again just to be sure. Going to re-solder those wires. I'm at the limit on one of them, it can't be stripped anymore. I have stripped it twice, once during initial setup and just now after de-soldering. Time to tin it and re solder with the good stuff.

D2 - recently back from the horses and I've just read the most posts I missed while gone. Here's an old primer on soldering that you may want to watch and it is a classic so IMO it presents a lot of really good information. We'll need to get that temp down to a lower temperature as indicated in the video. Flux may be your friend here and as G said a chisel tip would be an improvement for your iron. What type and model do you have?

D2 - recently back from the horses and I've just read the most recent posts here. Here's an old primer on soldering that you may want to watch. We'll need to get that temp down to a lower temperature. Flux may be your friend here and as G said a chisel tip would be an improvement for your iron. What type and model do you have?

I'm confident that the rest of the soldering will go fine with my current tip. Its a big effort to go to electronics store here as everyone is going crazy over christmas and driving like jack asses. You just can't move anywhere. But if I have to do it, I will. I am going to re-solder this bridge rectifier and stop at that until further instructions from Lee. It has been a great learning process =).

re temp: turn it down to 300C and wait a few minutes.
then just try to melt a bit of the solder to see how long it takes.
if it's a couple of seconds or longer, then it's too cold turn it up to 350 and wait a few minutes again.
keep trying 'till the solder melts almost instantly.
as D mentioned, too hot, and it fries it before it has chance to flow.
forget about the very point of the tip. there's not much heat there. go for the bit that just back about a 1/8th of an inch where there's more meat n' heat.
use ur iron's tip more so from it's side rather than the point. Then when applying the 'tip' to the job, touch the solder to the tip not the contact, and once the solder melts, u get better heat transfer to the contact and the solder will flow to it.
… or something like that.

The video discusses the tip temperature versus mass and solder type but in my experience if you can limit the dwell time a much hotter tip temp can be tolerated. Tinning the wires prior to soldering them to the bridge rectifier is a good thing. Do you have any flux at hand? That can help with oxidation if that is a problem.

I mostly work with a tip temperature of 700 degrees F so about 370 degrees C. Sometimes I'll bump that up to 750 F or down to a lower temp (not often) for a unique application. I use the 63/37 solder unless I need a higher temperature joint for other reasons and that would be a tin/lead/silver solder - only for special applications though.

WTF do I have to do to get anywhere with this?!

I have no more wire to strip, its at its limit. Have tried twice dressing the wire with some solder, it won't fit in the hole of the connector now. If I push the wire through, strands of wire pop up and I'm back at square one. This is really getting to me. 5 hours to do 2 simple solder joints....FUCK!
