Various Artists - Get Yourself A College Girl - The MGM Soundtrack Album
(1964, MGM) E4273

A fun 50 cent clearance find. I'd never heard of this movie, includes Nancy Sinatra in the cast and was filmed in Sun Valley, Idaho. includes a couple of songs each from The Jimmy Smith Trio, The Standells, and The Animals - and The Girl From Impanema - Astrud Gilberto

Nancy Sinatra - Sugar
(1966, Reprise)

produced by Lee Hazlewood. another recent clearance find. Interesting background on Sugar Town, written by Hazlewood:

“Sugar Town was an LSD song if there ever was one,” Hazlewood recalled in an interview, pointing to the line “...Now I just lay back and laugh at the sun.” Hazlewood elaborated:
“I was in a folk club in LA which had two levels. I could see these kids lining up sugar cubes and they had an eye-dropper and were putting something on them. I wasn’t a doper so I didn’t know what it was but I asked them. It was LSD and one of the kids said, 'You know, it’s kinda Sugar Town.' Nancy knew what the song was about because I told her, but luckily Reprise didn’t.

Broken beyond repair but highly affable
I was truly unaware of that, and thank God Warner Bros. wasn't hip to all that jive...come to think of it, they signed the Sugarcubes 20 years later, didn't they? :happy7:

Now, throw away all the notions you had in the 80s of this band...by 1993 they had gained some jazzy chops and could really put on a show!

PS The female backup singer will melt your speakers/headphones like Grade A unsalted.

If you prefer a fuller body with all the calories, here's Classic: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oei6-wnLWJA

Marcus Hook Roll Band - Tales Of Ol Grand Daddy, CD

I was waiting until Nav received his MD's before posting anything about this one. If you havent heard of or checked this out yet, I strongly suggest you do. This is a 70's Australian only release, just re released on CD, and LP. Great album from start to finish. Its Harry Vanda, and George Young's first band. They later became Flash And The Pan. George Young also being the older brother to Angus and Malcolm Young from ACDC. As well its the very first recordings featuring Angus and Malcolm. While its a stretch from ACDC's music, it certainly is an interesting and enjoyable listen.

I'm the Red Knight, by grant of the Black
I was listening this evening to a local FM radio show, Cypress Avenue (any other FM listeners here?) and got to hear Sturgill Simpson, a country music guy, more traditional than most these days. I'm not a big C&W fan, but I'd like to hear more of this guy.

Oh my - I'm so looking forward to listening to this. For those that don't know - Ben sent me four MiniDiscs that he recently recorded and I'm so stoked. I'm assuming that one of the discs is the Marcus Hook Roll Band - can't wait to give this one a listen. I've been playing a mix disc that Ben recorded and it is kick ass - there is only one song on the disc that I've heard before and that is only because Ben mentioned this band in an earlier post quite some time ago. I'm so grateful and as we all know this site kicks ass too. It's the mix of people here that makes this such a cool site.

Thanks Ben

Nav
