derek, Wow, that's a gorgeous Thorens! What arm is that? I have a TD 125 MK II with a 1974 Shure SME II improved arm, yours looks different from mine, I'll post a pic next. I bought mine in 1977 while in high school for the princely sum of $225 US, I still have it and use it daily.

I bought one of the last NOS Shure V15 IV cartridges with the original stylus on the planet from your neck of the woods (In Melborne AU) a few years back, now I need to replace the stylus soon, what cart are ya runnin'?? I had a lovely Grace F9-E for awhile and it was heavenly, an AudioQuest AQ something moving coil followed, but it was a bit heavy, and needed the counterweight basically dangling off the back of the arm.


Anyhoo, nice to meet a fellow Thorens lover :bounce: :bounce: :bounce:, mine just keeps on truckin'!!

I'm currently playing video files of one of my fav bands, :angel13:A-HA :angel12:, 'Summer Moved On' http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oYbZEdOKAjM

The singer is amazing, holds the record for the longest sustained note on a pop record (20.2 seconds) (8 measures)...and he doesn't take a breath before he hit's it, has an octave range that will make you faint.

Thank you for the kind comments. My SME arm is also a Series 2 Improved. I am currently using a Signet MR 5.0 Basic Cartridge but the stylus is showing signs of wear so I have stopped playing records temporarily. Have purchased an Ortofon OMB10 as a temporary fix as it is a cheap cartridge with good performance, its a quick fix instead of waiting 2 weeks for a Signet Stylus to arrive from USA, I can't wait that long. I plan to purchase an Audio Technica AT440MLa cartridge within the next month for a big improvement in sound quality. I noticed recently there is a slight warp in the platter, not sure what to do about that, it doesn't affect the speed so won't worry about it at this stage, it could have been that way since I bought the 160 Super 10 years ago. I also have a Thorens TD 165 with the standard TP-16 arm and Ortofon OMB10 cartridge, the stylus is also worn in that one. It has been a good player as well.

I looked up your TD 125 MK II on google, its also a very nice unit, and yes they do just keep going and going, brilliant build quality.

Currently listening to a Mix tape that I did when I was 15 years old (1993), having a bit of a chuckle at the pop songs that are on there, brings back memories of my father's first Hi-Fi VHS VCR (National NV-850), brilliant machine, that is the source that I taped it from.
 
Too funny, I bought my cart from Australia and you're thinking about getting a stylus from the US, small world eh?



This is an older pic of mine, I'll try to get a better pic of the arm soon so you can see the differences, mainly bar on top that connects the anti-skating wire thingie and your mounting plate looks different as well.

I don't know what your finances are like, but you should spend a bit more on a cartridge. I think you know that those tonearms were designed for the Shure V-15 series carts. They go for around $400 US, with JICO replacement stylus for about what you pay for the AT (a great cart for the price btw). I'd love to get the Grace F again, but at $500+ used I'll have to wait a bit.

I may be able to get you in touch with a Thorens guru for your platter issue.

What are the differences between the AT440MLa and the V15? Apparently the AT has superior tracking of the inner grooves. Would be cool to get in touch with the Thorens Guru, thank you.
