On this album, Joe breaks with most of his conventional wisdom.
It's a pretty complex album compared to many of his more recent releases.
I compare it somewhat to how 'Flying in a Blue Dream' presented itself, complete & complex and a quantum shift away from what preceded it,
albeit this is no 'Flying' IMHO. I'm glad to see the dude finally sticking his neck out.

That said, this will be the first Satriani album I won't actually buy.
I feel it's a tad bit over produced and disjointed.
Have the 256 kbit files of the whole thing and that's where it stays ...

Flying in a blue dream was my fav Satch album till I heard this.

Honestly took me by surprise saying you wont buy this one Tony. I know the artwork doesnt necessarily matter, but this one has a real cool cover too. 35 bones for vinyl though. Not sure ill be scooping that up anytime soon.

I should note, I also have Flying, Alien, Not Of This Earth, The Extremist, and the S/T albums on one format or another. This one blew me away. Couldnt have asked for a juicier sounding album. One tune I almost thought it was SRV playing in there.
 
Yeah, 'Flying' still grabs me every time. Probably because it has a huge handful of songs made for driving. And the slower, more rhythmic offerings are really melodic.
Picking favorites is always a struggle for me but 'Flying' is just so damned complete, high energy infused and flow-arranged, that it stands alone IMHO.

I'll admit, no matter the artist, there are those albums that take some time to grow on me. Perhaps this will be one of those due to it's complexity.
But yes ... it is weird to come out and proclaim that I won't buy this one. I own every other album he's released and always felt satisfied in
throwing down the coin because I always knew there would be 3 to 5 tracks that would resonate immediately. This album didn't deliver in that way for me.
It's kind of a weird experience TBH. I've listened to it in the car the most and haven't found a single song that I would call a "driving song".

I suppose another way to sum it up for me is that it seems like every song was conceived to do things completely different.
So in that respect, it's a huge creative push.

"Juicy" is a good word though. I totally get that.

Flying In a Blue Dream was a different kind of Satch album, I actually did not like it as much as his earlier material because is seemed to lack the same raw energy. The Telephone Song really irked me

The Phone Call is one of my favorites on that album. Cant argue with Big Bad Moon though.

Both of those songs are the ones that took a little bit of time for me to fully appreciate.
'Big Bad Moon' is one song I'd probably claim is filler to this day. Funny thing is, it got played a lot on the hard-rock stations back in the day.

'The Phone Call' bothered me too for a few years but I'd never fast forward or skip it. Now I think it's great.
I had the same reaction to 'Crazy' on 'Time Machine'.

first listen to this LP - wow this is great stuff, with terrific sound quality. I picked this up on vacation in SW France last month. I spent a couple of hours browsing at a fun shop - Jet Records - in Biarritz.

Listening to the late Nina Simone on the NPR show "Cypress Avenue." Adding to the good music is my Proton 300 "microwave oven" tuner and the excellent Grundig AN200 antenna. Oddly, the Sumo Charlie tuner preferred a cheap "T" antenna.

It was hard to leave Lee - they really know how to live over there. Lots of terrific food and wine. The best Cote Du Rhone and other wine I've had - and just $5 a bottle - try that in the states. Lovely ladies everywhere - at the beach, ooh la la. We were mostly in the middle of nowhere in SW France and day trips into Spain near Bilbao but the last 24 hours were in Toulouse which has a really interesting and walkable old town. I could spend a week exploring there, similar to walking around Rome or Paris - didn't expect that.

All of Europe is cool but when you are out of the normal tourist traffic it is way cool. The main attractions are fantastic but those areas not publicized can be even better. Thanks SLF for your posts.

very true, Nav. Lots of history to discover off the beaten path too. It does help to travel with folks who speak French or have a lot of patience because most of the locals can't/don't speak English. ...and the local food - cheese, sausages, beef burgundy, plateau fruits de mer, paella - is really something. Just about any restaurant or butcher/cheese shop will knock your socks off. so will a trip to the beach. :glasses1:

I remember that a trip to the beach would knock you shorts off. :shaking:

I agree that speaking the native tongue helps tremendously. Or am I confusing that with tonguing the natives?
