5th album and the last with Jan Akkerman on guitar.

That's crazy, and its never enough =). Very impressive, thanks for the shots, got any new ones?

ok you asked for it. Here's a bunch of pics of the record piles in the upstairs shelves (and on the floor, what a mess), and downstairs...Ikea Expedit shelves are great for storage. I'm looking forward to retirement in a few years for more time with sorting the piles.

removing the shrinkwrap and cracking open the 2014 release

The true test confirmed my findings as by the end of the evening, with the Pioneer receiver volume control knob at the 11 o'clock position, I succeeded in getting it to sound like Chet Baker was doing a cover of Cyndi Lauper's "Girls Just Want To have Fun."

Nando.

Ok cool. I'm going to remove the fan cooling on the WOPL and drive 4 ohms as hard as possible while listening to the chipmunks soundtrack just to make it bearable :evil4:

Now THAT'S a collection. A friend of mine in Brisbane has around that same amount, but because he lives in a high rise apartment, he has to resort to storing a lot of them in storage units. I'm Very impressed, keep 'em spinning!

Toad - Self Titled - (1972)

Very Black Sabbath-ish but different. Excellent

I saw the Big Brother / Janis Joplin "Cheap Thrills" mono release a while back- don't know exactly why, but I have such an aversion to mono. The Beatles (especially after their LSD trips) really did some cool stuff with stereo that I'd miss with a mono release. I guess I've grown accustomed to stereo and expect certain things to come from either the right or the left speaker.

BTW: Not that you really need to, but do you play these with the 1mil microgroove stylus? I have the 78rpm Beach Boys RSD release, it seems to sound better with the microgroove point.

Thanks Derek, you too - enjoy the spins! :happy3:

It's funny but with a lot of the 60 recordings, it's the Mono cuts which have more depth and presence, especially versus re-channeled or simulated Stereo of course. Mono was the standard with Stereo still a new kid on the block. I've read that the Beatles & George Martin focused on the mono mixes in the studio on many of these releases at least up to MMT, and left the stereo mixes to the engineers after the fact.

Mono especially brings out the low frequencies for me in these new 2014 Beatles reissues. The bass on Baby You're A Rich Man on Magical Mystery Tour, side 2, is astonishing.

I don't swap stylus/cartridge between formats and the Benz Wood Body stylus is fixed. I do use a Mode switch to run Mono output to both speakers on the Mcintosh MC 2205 amp.

I was wondering what your impressions were SLF - you read my mind before I had a chance to post the question, so Thanks for the MMT feedback.

On a whim, I picked up Sgt Peppers and The White Album today in mono. Since both these albums possess different "takes" / mixes compared to stereo, I decided to take the leap.

The box set doesn't make much sense anymore, signaling the end to being a 'complete-ist' for this long-time collector.

Nice picks! I also just picked a few of the Mono reissues instead of the box. I picked off most of these while on sale at a local store. I grabbed Rubber Soul, Revolver, and Pepper in addition to MMT. All have fantastic sound quality. I'm sure the White Album is terrific too. Paul's bass playing on Sgt. Pepper stands out in this mix and is incredible.

in case you haven't seen it - Michael Fremer's video of him opening the Mono box and discussing the titles is entertaining:

Oliver Sain: St. Louis Breakdown

Local legend who had a hand in just about every development of soul/blues/funk/disco/R&B music around St. Louis for decades and was still gigging regularly all around town until his death in 2003. I saw a lot more of him live than I ever heard on record, but this collection of tracks from throughout his career is a great sample of what he was about.

Elvis!

On an Elvis Costello bender:
MFSL "This Year's Model"

MFSL 2-disc 45RPM "Get Happy"

Friends of mine back in the 80s. We did quite a few shows with these guys. Another band that should have went somewhere and never did

EDIT: This was finally reissued but there was only 500 copies made. I strongly recommend snagging a copy before they are gone. This band is the only one that I know of that could pull off a Boston (Tom Scholz) guitar tone and not sound like Boston
