Very cool photo's Pure, I love the black screen here with nice low light pics like that last one. I still like vintage Marantz a bit better SQ wise. There's a thread on a black 2250 done in the amp section you should see. Do you still play 8-tracks?

Naw, I got rid of a deck, a portable and a bunch of 8 tracks a decade ago. Before that, I think they all sat in
The basement of my parents house for 2 decades before that. We moved around '79 and it was before that they stopped getting use.

As far as vintage brands go I guess I only have a preference for pioneer because I own it. The SX1280 has a really fanatical amplifier section, at least it performs beautifully. The preamplifier stage is eh, but thats likely due to all the switches on it I dunno. Not my photo here but it highlights a nice layout. Rarely do I see amplifier layouts like this, usually separate components.

Wowza- that's quite a list! I could picture myself with another one of these 9191's and defineatly a turntable. Maybe even a pair of speakers too. I passed on a set of HPM 100's local to me but they sounded pretty nice.

Joe, the big beasty receivers you could separate were never fully appreciated for their amazing SQ. I always wanted the big Sansui G, Rotel, or one of the Dual mono Kenwoods. I'd take a 1980 tho too ;)
 
Cool. I saw that when I was searching for 9191 a week ago. That seller has always had something to capture my attention throughout the years. You could make your 9191 look just like it for $215. -lol. That wouldn't take care of the sides and top but if it's in a rack who cares.

On a separate note: I'm pretty pleased with the performance of this deck. However, the Dolby setting is just ok. Once I figured out how it works ( on for record AND playback ), it really lowered the noise floor. However, if the music is really jumping, I prefer to not use it. The Dolby setting seems to negatively impact the sonic quality and sound stage. Notably adds an edge to vocals. While it's not extreme, I would still use it on some recordings.
Chome tapes don't look easy to find. Those cheap Maxell UR's that I'm using might be part of the issue but wow the prices of something better! I'm considering getting a few tapes from Larry here a Pheonix. Anyone tried 'em or can comment?
 
Joe, I just bought a box of 10 Phoenix Blues. If you would like to follow an interesting thread look for "The Traveling Guitar Tape." I hadn't recorded on the Phoenix chrome tapes, until then. I won't let out the trade secret of what's loaded into that cassette shell, but you'll have far better results using this tape, than any other new tape out there at the moment. And you'll receive a substantial member discount buying them from Larry, as I just did.

This just in: I went out for lunch with my son and found these NOS BASF Chrome tapes at a thrift store(.50 cents). I dunno how good they are but I'm going to try one out today.

Oh yeah. BIG difference here.
I noticed the noise floor really dropped, and there is an increase in dynamics.

How does a group buy work?

I'm still on the fence with Dolby B though. Seems like it adds an edge to the treble that is not desirable. However, with it on, noise is hardly noticeable.

Without it, there is a little noise, but much less then those cheap UR's.

I suppose I should try to test a different track, one like Debussy which sounded pretty horrid on the UR - way too much noise.

I suppose Dolby B was probably pretty acceptable at the time this deck was produced, but it seems like a double edge sword to me.

Thanks for posting pictures of your Pioneer CT-F9191 and your SX-1280. I say, those two wood-cased components do look good together. I've been a Pioneer fan from way back, as well as a few others on this forum; namely Lee, Steven, and John.

The SX-1280 exudes quality and elegant styling. It's over-built, as you would expect from that period of receivers. I'm with stuwee on all the Japanese-built 1970's receivers. I remember looking through the magazines, of the time, which had their yearly Buyer's Guide, and quickly flipping to the last pages of each of the different component sections. Remember how the equipment was listed in order from lowest to highest price? Well, that's my favourite section at the higher price category.

A Group BUY

If you like the tape. All that like it. Gets together a buys a large amount for a cheaper price. How many did I do of the Sony'S. I forget.
