I'm from the get the best tapes you can, and don't use Dolby at all camp, two of my decks have Dolby S, which is by far the best Dolby system out there. I only use it on classical recordings that have lot's of quiet passages, or Lps that have an insane amount of surface noise.
Even on those I hate the the dulling of transient leading edges, and how it makes the upper treble sound. Maybe you should hold off on the repairs untill you get the TDK being passed around? Or maybe we could enable you into getting another deck? Or two, or three? You can never have too many
