I have a set of the 12" ones from Quantum 5's and want to put them in my SM-120 cabs. I have to cut the inner diameter a little more so I will be doing that tomorrow. Question is how do I wire them in since I am not using a dual coil crossover? Could someone diagram how to jump the 2 sets of terminals so I am running straight through both coils? Also, which coil would I go through first and how would I identify which coil is which?

Thanks in advance

uuullppp... looks like I am going to have to wing it I guess. Today I am opening the woofer diameter an extra 1/3" to accomodate the Watkins cages. Hope someone replies before I start attempting to wire them LOL

New Watkin's woofers are $900 a piece so I really hope I don't destroy these

Now now!

Don't be doing any premature amplification! Leave your jacks off.

I was thinking about taking the X-overs out of the Quantums and installing them in the SM's. Not sure that would work though as the SM cabs are quite a bit larger then the Quantum 5's. I think the Quantum crossovers were built for a specific internal cab dimension size? The stupid mid and high controls are toast also but maybe I can incorporate the SM controls. Sounds like a major PITA

Watkis is still in business.

You can call them. Last time I was in Kingsport, they were still there. Their number is (423) 246-3701. At onetime, thy still had replcement speakers for their product.

I talked to the old man a few times already. He's like in his 80s and I did not want to take up a lot of his time. I just need to figure out which coil is which and then how to jump them correctly so the woofs run like normal single voicecoil speakers but they might be 6ohms jumped??? Nothing wrong with these woofs, the surrounds were replaced already. I am on a really tight budget so this is why I am using my existing Infinity cabs. As for the Quantum 5 cabs and grills, if anybody wants them, just stop by, they can be had for a $20 bill. I have the EMIT tweeters that were redone also for $50 for the pair + shipping, got some Peerless 1" inch domes also for the same price + shipping, they are the original goldbacks from about 1978

Lee said you would be the one to ask how to wire these

It's a AW Sperry SP-5A

I am thinking this meter is shit. I tested both coils and get 1 ohm readings for both

Tried again and both sides and the needle is all the way to the right for both

Analogs you have to zero out. Put the leads together and there should be a zero adjust pot.

1 ohm eh? dayam. Even in series that's only 2. The pig has been pushing a 2 ohm load ih Phoenix for a couple weeks. A 2 ohm sub at 28HZ and down. Not sure of the power levels but it can't be much..

Yes, I think this meter is toast. Just hooked up that old GE 12" and it does the same thing, needle all the way to the right. Hooked the loose woofs to the speakers wires and they all work with my Sony test amp. The Watkins fired up through both coils individually no problem

Can you hook them up in series?

The dual voicecoils? That was what I was asking about but I have no way to know which coil to start at, they don't denote which they are and obviously, my meter is useless to figure that out. Would it actually make any difference in your opinion (which coil I start with)?

No, they are all in play, just have tpo make sure you're going in series. Say you have VC #1 +/-,-----VC2 +/-.

VC #1 + to VC #2 -, ... then speaker wires on VC#1 minus, and VC#2 plus.

To determine plus/minus, take a AA battery, hook accross the VC leads, if the cone recedes the leads are backwards, if the cone comes forward then the battery designations for plus and minus are what the leads should be labeled as.

Remember VC wires are tiny, when experimenting like this BE VERY COGNIZANT OF HEAT BUILDING UP IN THE VOICECOIL!!
