You remember the AV speakers and all that. I wanted to give him a pair of Pioneers but didn't have one up to snuff to send out so I gave him a Pioneer DV-C503 5-disc turntable DVD/CD changer.

NOW IT CAN ALSO BE TOLD...

I saw a Craigslist ad for some CS-77s, crossovers slightly modded, a little veneer trouble spot, not perfect but certainly damned good as I would know...I sent an email...

Once again an old friend answered and they are mine to give. My friend is also a speaker nut like me and we've traded speakers and things like that a number of times. This should be very good.

CS77s for Master Tasuke.JPG

For $50 I think that was a good deal.

When I can get them home I'll get them sent.

they appear beautifully well cared for, damn near cherry at that.

you say the x-overs have been modded... cap replacement, perhaps? that seems the invariable first order of business
for most owners of speaker systems of this vintage. i've been reading up on these, and damn if they don't sound promising,
quite possibly head and shoulders beyond any stereo loudspeaker pair i've ever had, even.

i use a pair of 10GA. speaker cables, bare wire either end from my 130w/8ohm 1990 VSX-D1S receiver.
my current speaker pair, CS-G503s from sometime in the 90's, use cheapish spring-loaded tension-type terminals,
while these 77's use screw-type posts that generally work best with spade-type lugs.
i think i've some gold-plated spades ratted away somewhere, but i'm of two minds
as to whether those are possibly inferior to bare-wire binding. i know the spades would be more sure and secure,
but i've always somehow been of the mind that bare wire speaker cable connections provide the best possible overall sound.
what are your experiences on this, if i might ask?

If you can reef down on both ends avoid another conection and go bare...strip back about an inch and wrap that post..

The board will probably be mounted on the terminal cup directly...that's how the little round ones are done. If you want to change it you will have to cut it free from the plastic tie(s) and desolder it and find a way to attach it to and cabinent or terminal plate.

Actually, some of those vintage Pioneers use plain screws, some terminal screws with a ridged edge (like a dime). you find the originals removed sometimes and Phillips screws replacing them (they are usually slotted as are the speaker connectors, which I replace with Phillips heads or computer screws to make it easier for me to tighten, but not usually on the speakers themselves.

BTW I sent the payment by Priority Mail directly to him with our Christmas card and CD, my OXIDY and Scorpion8 Country mixtapes and both the Christmas Iceberg and Antique Christmas and although he's going to deliver them to mom this week it will be a couple weekends before my brother in law gets back over here and April before I can send, so hang in there.

My payment got there and the speakers are at my mom's...my brother in law will be over next weekend and I'll go over them. I think the terminal plate is broken in two on one speaker but this shouldn't be hard to fix.

Actually, they came today when my BIL brought mom over as she's going into surgery this week to have rods put in her back...

You're very lucky, it was just the terminal screws missing and you can use regular screws for now.

awesome. i actually have a couple sets of large-lug speaker binding posts from a collection of electronics parts that my mother's BF gave me.
if i can make them fit, they'll be way better than the original screw posts, and far more suited towards the heavy, 10ga. cables i use.

sorry to hear about you mother; i have something of a rough idea of what it must be like,
since, back in 1997/1999, right before i turned legal adult, i had a series of four SHRINERS operations
to correct my outward-ish facing legs via cutting the thighbones in half about midway,
rotating them to proper alignment and fastening them with an elaborate series of screws that slot into an L-brace
driven onto the bone and fastened in place, one full set per leg.

all this had to stay in place for a year at a time while the bone re-bonded at the correct angle,
then have the support hardware removed before they could begin the same procedure on the other leg.

it was an interesting experience, up at the SHRINERS portion of OHSU in PORTLAND, OR, my hometown,
and fortunately i had my grandma and her husband up there to help me get through it,
since they had a massive house back then that was far better suited to my crutch-dependent mobility of the time than my family's place was.

at any rate, sorry for rambling, just wanted to illustrate that i'm no stranger myself to the operating room.
i haven't even touched, for instance, on the flurry of work i had done at OHSU throughout the last decade
to address my auto-immune intestinal disorder...
