Just received an e-mail from Joe about some concerns with wire clearance below the hold down plate on the White Oak cap upgrade. I've exposed the area of concern and will point out the possible consequences of treating this particular point with less than the attention it deserves.

The 400 is done. Pretty straight forward upgrade on this one. A lot less wire to reroute and rebundle. The "no frills" approach of the 400's means a lot less of everything to deal with. Except in pure IN YOUR FACE power this one sounds as good as any we've kicked out the door here. I think you'll be happy with this one also Sutton, and once again , guaranteed for my lifetime.

Looks better than "showroom new". I'll bet this is the prettiest one on the planet, and I know it sounds better tahn any on Earth. What is it's serial number? Oh, I want you to sign each piece on the chassis inside, with the date, please. Be in there forever...and the future generations will know 'who done it'...

So is the OERW ready to come with the 550 to Virginia? Let me know shipping info and I'll send labels, and also remuneration for all the stuff to date..I'll pm you bout that.

Sutton, whatcha got for interconnects??

I typically have some think RCA or other special cables which I have bought in bulk from Parts Express. I haven't bought in to the esoteric cables thing yet. I just use a fairly think=ck interconnect, usually not one that comes with the DVD palyer..

What cha thinking and what are your observations?

Larry sent me a couple pair of Tara Labs 60.00 interconnects as I would not spend that kinda money on "voodoo" cables, had em 1 hour and ordered 10 more pair. You now have a decent source, and as much difference as you can hear between the Onix, and no Onix, there is about half again as much difference in basic RCA cables and the Tara Labs. More "DEFINITION" cleaner, clearer, however you want to say it, but with your system now and the speaks you have you'll notice a difference.

Hey Lee. My 700 should be arriving like today I'm thinking. Let me know when she arrives.

It is here Scott. Haven't opened it yet but the box looks unmolested.

I've never gone the high dollar interconnect route, or high dollar speaker wire either. I always go with thick 100% OF Copper, but beyond that, not done it. I've had audio salesmen attempt to corner me with high dollar speaker wire, but I just could not hear a difference. The more the salesman talked the less difference I heard. If double blind tests could conclusively prove one is better than another, maybe, but most things I have read have indicated a person can not hear the difference in wire, but that is just me. Maybe I should try some.

I was of the same mind as you Sutton, but changing IC's did make a diofference, I'll send you a couple pairs to audition and see what ya think.

Yep, your a sucker for the wood cabs. I think I have 3 sides to a 700 cab and a couple for the 1000 autocorrelator if ya need em.

Sounds good Larry. Just placed a Mouser order to populate the remaining 6 boards so I'll be good to go.

How does the old 400 that just got to you look? Is it as nice as the first "newer" one? I hope it can be made to make beautiful music. A pair of 700B's and a pair of 400 Ser I's...I think they will look great in my rack, and sound way better than the Bryston 7B's and 4B's that occupy the spce now..

Lee,
Do you order the PL14_20 boards from the White Oak Audio web site? I think I need to have at least two on hand at all times.

Mark

I buy 10 at a time Mark. Yeah, it wouldn't hurt to have a couple ready.

Yes Sutton, the 2nd 400 looks good too. The meter bezels are tinted but I think I have some untinted I'll swap out. That way it will match your first one.The face plate may have a small scratch that is barely visible, but other than that they'll make a nice pair.

Great...I hope she looks almost as good. Anyway, I know you have the Workhorse Warhouse One Eyed Monster about ready to kick out the door, and the first 400 close. How are the 400 and 700B in the second round coming? God, I am so anxious to play..I hope you can find a pair of matching meters, that would make them look better, if they match, and I'm bidding on the faceplate and handles from the parted out 700B on eBay, but don't know if my snipe amounts will be high enough or not. I seriously would like to learn how to rebuild one of these. I may have to see if you can find a good cheap oscilloscope, signal generator and anything else I may need on eBay os I could try to rebirth these amps. I think there are way more 400's coming up for sale than 700B's. Didn't realize they were as rare as they are, and with Joes board and all the work he has done, they aen't going to be getting any cheaper, after the word gets out.

Has one with Joe's PCB ever sold on eBay? Bet they would go through the roof...it may take a little time, but the prices of PL have to go higher...
