With the WO 1000 pulling amp duties in the rack for the shakedown, thought I'd get on with the 400. Sutton, ya got a cherry. Late model, never been hot, obviously low houred, never been touched. output sockets straight and not discolored.

It does look "cherrry" on the inside. I'll bet the old PCB and storage caps could be sold on eBay as ANOS, and make a few bucks. Wow, I am shocked how "new" it does look. The caps are still shiny and the driver baord still vibrant colors. I hope she is in ggod shape otherwise, and ready to rock. You made some real time in getting the board populated. Can't wait to hear a report on her sonic abilities..

I'm thinking tomorrow night we'll be testing. Do you want old parts sent back with em? There will be a full set of outputs and drivers, they're worth something, caps too. Not to mention the PL14a driver board.

What did you see that you haven't seen before? The RCA transistor looks newer than the others, and has obviously been changed out. Is it the fact that someone has mixed different transistors? Or the sloppy grease work? Or what do you see?

I think we should try to sell the PCB and the Caps and anything which might be saleable to some eBayer, unless you want them. I don't want them to use...just to sell to someone who might be willing to pay something for them,, I'm a cheap BAS^%$d

The outputs on the left side were 2SD733's. For that time they were extremely fast. They had an fT of 15mhz. The XPL 909's that were stock had an fT of 4 mhz. What's that mean you ask?? Having a fast output when the driver section is not designed for it causes instability. That's when an audio amplifier transitions to an oscillator and if not stopped runs away and destroys itself in "high frequency oscillation". I am guessing this amp did oscillate but did not test it before I tore it down. Wishing I did now, haven't had the pleasure of seeing that on my bench.

Being a big fan of Fairchild turntables I have always been curious as to the Fairchild outputs and how they stack up. I would like to be rich and famous and have a pair of Fairchild monoblocks but alas that ain't gonna happen.

Anyway back to my original question, how do their out puts and various components stack up in your opinion in today's world.

They have and still do make very good transistors and other semiconductors and passive devices. I don't know exactly when they were bought by the Japanese, but even when they produced components here they farmed a lot out to Japan and the components produced there were every bit as good as the ones made here. They are my preferred input differential pair (TIS-97's) and first part of the second pair(TIS-93's). Good stuff, consistent charactertistics.
