Shoot me a PM once you're ready to move them and we'll see if we come to an agreement.

Thank you!
That sounds good. I have some Stanton 881 and 681 original styli that I probably won't use. Someone could be using these because I just have entirely too many.

Those original Stanton /Pickering stylus’ are good to have!
They are and I got a little bit obsessed about collecting them. I now realize that it would take about six lifetimes to wear them all out lol. Somebody needs to enjoy them, I just don't have any friends that are into audio like I am. I know someone would be happy to have them, so I'll get a list together.

Do that, I would like to take a look. My Denon 301 has been great but has been with me a lot of years. I need to check the stylus to see if there's anything left, though it still sounds good. I just saw where Goldring has released a new HOMC in my price range but I'd like to see what else is around if, in fact, I need to swap out. Not sure I want to pay the same as a new cartridge to have the Denon re-tipped.

I also have a very good 301 along with the 110

I went with a fairly high end moving coil that I got a deal on so that's the only reason I'm giving them up. They all have their qualities, their own sound and strengths and those denons are very good.

There is a thread on Audio science review, and they measured many vintage and newer cartridges.

I think many of us already knew this but it is very difficult to beat the Shure V-15 type V with a good original stylus. I think the SAS boron runs a pretty close second. I have both of them and it’s pretty hard to tell them apart, and for me I’m done looking for the holy grail of cartridges. They have a flat frequency response, and if I want to do some EQing from my receiver, that’s what I do.

I also think that the SAS boron sounds just as good if not better than the SAS sapphire for the type V. I had one of them until I accidentally snapped the cantilever… ouch.

I think Boron tube is the hot ticket, from a technical standpoint.

Sapphire and ruby are too heavy and have a high resonance.
After having heard both of them, I think your assessment is right on the money. The sapphire one sound a bit lifeless to me, like a tube sound almost. Not that I think tube sound lifeless but that’s as close as an analogy as I can make. There’s no doubt that the SAS Boron sounds very good..

I noticed when Dynavector made there one Karat 17 (I owned one for about a year) they kept the diamond cantilever very short, and I believe a diamond weighs less than both a sapphire and a ruby. Not that’s it’s on subject but interesting that they chose diamond.

I’ll take it a step further, I don’t know if I could tell the difference between the original type V Micro Ridge stylus, and the SAS/B if they were side-by-side. They are pretty similar in my opinion. Some would call my turntable middle of the road, and I never liked the term midfi, but I think it’s resolving enough to tell differences pretty good.

Sapphire has a density of 3.98 g/cm³. (Carbon)

Ruby has a density of 3.98 as well (Alumina)

Diamond has a density of 3.5–3.53 g/cm3 (Carbon)

So, Diamond is slightly less dense. (~11%)

EDIT- Boron is 2.46 or 38% less dense than Sapphire/Ruby and 30% less than Diamond. That should equate to less "unsprung" mass, and therefore faster acceleration. But Diamond solid would be stiffer than Boron tube, although you could go almost 40% larger diameter with Boron than Diamond at the same mass... You get into the weeds quickly, but it seems apparent why Shure brothers went to boron tube. And their thin wall Boron tube was larger diameter than their aluminum tube.

thanks for that, very interesting.

That’s what makes type V so special is that beryllium cantilever.

I talked to a well known retipper, and he said he rarely comes across an original type V micro Ridge stylus with a bad suspension. So when I wear out my original stylus I’m going to have it re-tipped by him. although I did buy one off of eBay that had a bad suspension and it was a micro ridge, that seemed to surprised this guy.

I wonder what the density of beryllium is.

Beryllium being toxic likely has something to do with it. Probably was killing sales in CA.
