Sansui 5000x fixer- uper

The unit is my Sansui 5000X receiver. I can swing away the tuner scale. Are talking about the compressed air. If so after that is it advisable to attempt cleaning the chassis and circuit boards with some kind of solution? I did take some alcohol and Q-tips wipe a small area of exposed bare metal of the chassis and lifted some brown/black gunk off rather easily.

when you say tunning circuitry are you referring to the mechanical tuning units that have the fins gears an axles. Sorry This is really first real attempt at anything on this level so my question are going to be elementary. I appreciate the help. I really want to do this and not screw anything up in the process.

The tuning capacitor can e blown out with air. So can the rest of it. I was just cautioning against compressed air if you could not remove the glass plate to get the dust off the tuning dial..
 
Static electricity

Seems like I remember something about grounding yourself to avoid damaging circuitry with static electricity. I am concerned as I am replacing some lights and have to touch stuff in there to do that.

Static electricity can damage semiconductors and IC's especially..

Yes don't do anything to the tuning fins and circuitry that goes with them. I wouldn't use anything more powerful then a can of air from a safe distance. Probably not a good idea to use you own compressor or you could rip components right off the boards. Gently use the canned air and if dust remains use a soft bristle paint brush very gingerly. Between the two you should be able to get most of the dust out. If the tuning dial is dusty then take it apart if you can and gently clean the dial and glass.
 
Ric, IF you have an air compressor, what I use is an Air Brush with a in line dryer and
just turn down the regulator to the desired amount of air pressure.
You can pic up air brushes cheep on the bay.
 
Reinstalling Light bars

When i bought this 5000x the previous owner had attempted to replace some burnt out face plate, tuner and meter lights. I have acquired and installed the lights but dam if I can figure out how the light fixtures go back in behind the front panel. Can anyone help me with this?

Yes, I have it but it doesn't really go into the disassemble/ assemble aspect except an exploded view of the knobs and front panel. had I taken it apart myself I would have a better understanding but I got it with the light fixtures out. I know I will be able to get it eventually but so far I haven't found a enough room to slip all that stuff back in there. It's like something else needs to come out before the lights will go back in.

Pray you don't have to work on a Luxman.....they're even worse...
 
The only two Sansuis I worked on were a pain to change the bulbs too. I used either a tweezer or needle nose pliers to get sat them from the back. No much space between the palte behind them and the dial. If they took the fixtures out good luck.

Looks like I will have to release the tuner cables and remove the tuner plate at least on one end to maneuver that main light fixture in behind the tuner dial plate. I'll be tackling that tomorrow. Good Night

Have you found the manual yet? There are three different versions on Eletrotanya.com, two at 3 MB and one at 6 MB.

I have had a service manual from the start but it doesn't show anything about assembling/dissembling anything really. I went to Elektrotanya.com. The manual I have has 27 pages, one of those @ Eletrotanya has 31 pages but I was unable to figure out how to successfully make a download from that site this morning in the limited time I had. Will try again this evening.

Your illustration shows the 4 four bulbs in a plastic fixture that illuminate the mode markers above the tuner dial that is attached to the top of a V shaped metal fixture that has 5 bulbs that illuminate the dial and the meters. the whole unit is nearly 8" long and 2" high that all has to go in behind the tuner plate.

Is there someone here that has access to Elektrotanya.com that would be willing to download a manual and Email it to me. They show 3 manuals for the 5000X if you do a search of ALL categories. the one I am interested in is the one with 31 pages as it has 4 more pages that the one I have and maybe more info.

Rick at StereoManuals.com has the 72 page service manual for the 5000X. His stuff is top notch - well worth the cost IMO.

The light bars are installed!

OK, I got them in! No big deal really, just had to remove one tuner pulley and the 6 screws holding the tuner plate and move it away from front of the chassis about 1/2 an inch. The light fixtures slipped in and buttoned up no problem. Got tuner pulley back on and cable aligned in order and seems to work just fine. Now all the lights except the one on the tuning indicator are working. the bulb is in the top of the indicator but the wire is not connected all most looks like it was cut. It is a tiny wire. I will look into what is involved in repairing that.
