We shall document the packing like the RG-9 and MBL Onix. First, a good heavy DISHPAK box modified to fit, line the bottom with foam, 1".

This SX really kicks butt..... Have been playing it through some cheapo (but rather good sounding) Minimus-7's. Those are those little metal Radio Shack speakers from years back that several studios around use as a reference check for the mass market. Really need to try my other speakers but it sounds so good I hate to touch it! :)

Never owned a Pioneer receiver or amp so this was a roll of the dice per say. So far I am very impressed. There appears to be way more power in that little box than one would believe. The sound is very detailed and I'll call it separation of the FM stereo is very nice. The sound has a sparkle to it, oh and it looks cool in the dark!

Oh no Lee, I did not know you had a second one....Mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm!

That's good to know that your SX-850 arrived safe and sound, Robert. If you had the chance, Pioneer CS-99A speakers would sound great powered by your Pioneer receiver.

Thanks Nando.... Guess that is one more for the list of items to watch out for as I could use another set of speakers. Yes, thankful the shipping demons were off working magic on someone elses toys! Lee did a nice job of packing but it is still a roll of the dice.

Moved the SX to the shop downstairs this morning, sounds only ok there as the acoustics really suck. The living room is a great sounding room as every wall and ceiling is a different size which really cuts the reflections.

I also pulled the cabinet and applied some Watco Danish oil to the wood..... Wow, did that come to life. I'll try a photo but don't think it will come through very well.

Hi Robert,

It's nice to see old Pioneers with wood veneer, rather than vinyl applique. I use Old English oil for my own gear (stereo, stuwee!). Here's my Pioneer SX-1050; my favourite receiver.

It's interesting you mentioned Realistic Minimus 7s being used as studio monitors. I bought these speakers when new, and they were $40 for the pair. They are quite a cult classic. I gave one pair to my youngest son for his system. He has a nice little starter system for his new place, which I pieced together from components I had collected.

Hi Nando..... That is a nice looking receiver. Agree that wood tops plastic if possible. Ha, I am going to end up with a house full of cult things and not even know it!

What other receivers do you have?

I also bought those RS speakers new and also bought a pair for my Mom to upgrade from those homemade ones mentioned in the speaker thread.

I looked up those Pioneer and Korner speakers you guys mentioned, very nice. Looks like those Korner's would need serious power or are they very efficient?

Here is a not so good photo of the cabinet.....

Kornerhorns are one of the most efficient speakers out there, 98dbat 1 watt at 1meter. IIRC. So when I put 250 - 300 watts to em they get seriously loud.

Hi Larry,

No, I used some fine steel wool, wiped with mineral spirits and then the Watco oil..... I really like oil type finishes with a satin finish. I did pull the cabinet so as not to get anything into the receiver or scratch the faceplate.

Thanks for the info on the Korner's.... I sorta figured they must be efficient as you mentioned they would make a good match. Did you build yours? I see some folks did on a little search I did on them earlier today.
