Richard's PL Beastie Rework

A chassis "pop" or is it on the speaker outs too??

Put a .1 or .01 300-400 volt ceramic cap accross that switch. That'll stop the arcing...

Hope so, but I just noticed a puff of smoke out of the switch... think it's still good or are we pushing too much current on that initial turnon?

Swapped wires on the meter... problem stayed with the right. Hmmm... let me go review Joe's cal info...

I think I just answered my own question on the switch... it's now stuck .. welded prolly.. in the on position! yikes!

Actually it's better than the off position. I would say it's useful life has been lived....

The original rotary switches were rated for 3 amps, why in the world would they fry??

Ok, got a new switch in, buttoned up and whatnot. Listening .... not bad, not bad... I have some rail decoupling caps coming on Monday, so it'll be even better. Got some "Camera Eye" by Rush going on it now. Clear and clean... too bad it's midnight tho - the real "test" will be tomorrow when I can go balls to the wall with it.

Richard that right side meter gave up the ghost. We can see about getting another one in there, or maybe we can always put back on the black blank faceplate without meters - up to you.

Here's a small vid of it in "action". Obviously my phone's mic can't take the db's.. 1st hand experience is it's all "crystal clear" and loud as sheeite... :toothy10: In about the 45 sec mark you'll see me sort of glance at the volume, realizing we haven't hit "critical mass" yet and turn it up some more...

The transformation of this amplifier is phenomenal guys. Where else could someone go to get this much done with one of these guys. Great job Jer and everyone else that contributed.

Richard - it seems you'll be getting your kick ass amp soon! You must keep us posted after it returns home.

No kidding! I guess you can polish a turd after all. This is a great bunch of folks here, I just wish I had something to contribute. If any members down Houston way need any metal fab help, let me know! I just came in the house from another 8 hour shop marathon. I love building stuff out of metal the same way these guys love tinkering with electronics.

LOL.. hey maybe I should send the beat-to-hell chassis back to ya to straighten out? That guy got "whooped" by the USPS gorilla pretty bad.

So I spoke with Lee... he's got a meter he'll send my way shortly. I have some rail capacitors coming today, so I'll get them in.. and then the real torture testing begins.

Well, tonight I did a couple of things. Installed new bypass caps (.33 / 400V polys), then realized I really should redo the input lines. Brand new lines from the RCA's, to the pots, and over to the PLWO board.

Listening to some old Steely Dan now.. one word - ENTHRALLED. I think the next project is going to be a relook at the 700B from PLF. One thing I am thinking of there... I MIGHT see about pulling the transformer from the series one I have. I am just thinking back now... with the transformers out of the series ones, one thing I have noticed is how the leads and possibly windings seem to be.. well.. heavier gauge than the transformers out of the B's. I am definitely going to do the "works" treatment complete with the Lee-patented "B.A.B.B." installed. All new wiring, with the AC routed all "north", and the DC "south".

Damn this M'fer sounds GOOD.. Richard, this one is really going to knock your socks off! :thumbright:
