Jim, found out that ripping those 2x4's on the old Rockwell saw is just too hard on the motor.
I have a large number of used southern pine 2x4's Ive collected and saved,
So, made a southern style screen door out of the two I ripped before stopping.
Yup, went to pricing 1x6 boards, they're within budget.

Taking a short break from home renovation while drywall joint compound dries.
Want to try a better head before I take this further.
Got a Tascam 122 MkIII head from a electronics recycler.
The original head, disassembled, and the Teac Tascam head.
Note the bronze shim. It sits directly under the "Ferrite" front logo and is where most all of the thread locker was located. I supported the square body with sharp corner oak blocks and the heads tapped right out with a small punch and tiny hammer.

George, what's a good set of heads for the MK III look like? I got the transport sitting in front of me and need a comparison. It's my friends deck and I'm doing a bit of work to it for him. The transport, outside of being a little dusty looks to be in perfect shape. Even the grease between the plates was recognizable and pliable. I'm going to clean it all out anyway and get out the grease gun and go for it. I took a qtip and some alky and I didn't get much for dirt out of the tape path and the tire is still squarshy............... Why the hell did Tascam use shitty ass surface mount stuff on the motor board?

I gotta find a good READABLE 122 MKIII schematic so I can try to trace the Meter Signal for the left channel. The left meter doesn't deflect, the red Peak LED and the lamp work fine, I have meter deflection on the right channel and the deck output sounds great it's just no Left meter. Both meters work as I swapped them from left to right so the meter is fine. The unit is a bitch to signal trace as the meter amp board, front panel input jack board and the connecting board between them are packed in pretty tight.

The rear panel input jack and the front panel input jacks process the music I inject, records fine, headphones sound great and the volume pots vary the levels correctly, the record level is spot on and adjustable, it's just the meter signal isn't making it to the meter. If it was mine, I'd just put a pic of grammy and gramps on the meters like I did my amp. If anybody has a GOOD skizmo, I'd appreciate it. If you have perused the 122 MK III manual it's got the 122 MK III, the 112R MK II, and the 112 MK II all spread out and the manual is a mess. If I can find a nice clear copy of just the 122 MK III, I can print it at at wally world or Office depot on larger sized paper (think Mr. Magoo). There is like 6 pages of small print.

Found what Sam replaces on the motor control board (and what they cost in 2019):

122 Mk III or II, 238 capstan motor cap kit
10 uFd 16V X3$1.20
1 uFd 50V$0.45
4.7UFd 35V$0.45
.001uFd 50V Polystyrene$1.00
3.3uFd 25V Bi Polar X2$1.40

The transport assembly is in perfect working condition so it will wait till the next service. I seen a bunch of guys fuck the surface mount motor control boards and they were problematic after the work.

I just ordered a custom manual for the 122 MK III, with the Owners manual and the custom Service manual which has the schematics straightened out so you can see them.

Diagrams in the service manual have been split into multiple pages and made larger, so that small details are easier to read. Nice!

  • 2 manuals in 1 convenient manual
  • Laser black & white reprint copy
  • 104 pages
  • Printed on high quality paper (8 1/2" x 11" inches letter size)
  • Comb binding
  • Protective transparent front cover
  • Black cardstock back cover

I feel your pain, Perry. Remember spending a lot of time scanning the pages into Acrobat and InDesign to line up the schematics and channel flow charts for the M-50 Tascam mixer I had 10 years ago. That manual was ridiculous.
