- I'm 61 & think I'm still 22... just ask me.
I was in the building that was on the east side, going North on U.S. 1, across from Eckler's Corvette shop. Just across the river from The Cape.
I ended up Down-Range, after the Soldering Assembly-Line on U.S. 1, where all the SRP was stored and cut. That's where we assembled the Dragon.
Those buildings, Solid Rocket Propellent Storage & Assembly were behind all the blast berms to protect the city of Titusville just in case. The Engineers just laughed at that as those berms were to appease the residents. Would have done absolutely zero for containment.
One of the coolest memories was when the Engineers gave us a two day briefing before we could enter the down range site to work.
They fired off one of the Dragons, we watched the Engineer steer the thing around a flippin' tree and hit the target.
Then they lit off 175 lbs of scrap SRP, in a huge ditch, to show the energy the propellent contained... it was a huge wall of flame about 200' high and 75' wide.
There were around 10 buildings where where all the SRP was stored, cut & assembled down range.
Some of those buildings contained 20,000 pounds of SRP with none below 5,000 lbs and most at 10,000 lbs.
I was at McDonnell from 77-80.
I didn't know this but, my future/now wife also worked @ McDonnell Douglas. She was at the Admin Building on U.S. 405. That was way in front of the Down-Range site.
Really enjoyed the time there.
