hi all i just bought a phase linear 400 series 1
heres the ebay item number 180897171985 if anyone wants to check it out
i talked via email to joseph at white oak audio he said to replace the output transistors caps and mica TO-3 with grease insulators not sil pads i think thats what was said lol
i will be powering a set of ess amt 1b speakers that were re-foamed otherwise all original they really sounded great with just a carver mxr-130 until it gave up a channel
if anyone is on tonight any thoughts to getting this amp up to spec and where to send it to get it to make the ess amt 1Bs screaming in small increments lol yea right i love to rock out
i also have a set of ess amt 1As that i will soon get another pl 400 to run as well as a pre amp undecided on the pre amp as of now still looking into what to buy also any thoughts on that would be great too
thank you all in advance
i hope im not being to foreward as a newbie if so please let me know

The forum also has a custom made case to ship the PL amps in, so if you don't have much experince shipping these beasties, we can send it on so you can ship it to whomever you like. I'll post the link to it in a sec.

Well, If you arte going whole hog, Power Supply Filter caps, Joe's new driver board, a DC protect relay board, MJ 15024 drivers with MJ 21196 as outputs. That would be the ideal upgrade. You can get by with less, but considering the speaks, a DC protect would be standard in my book.
If the power ratings of the ESS is correct into 4 ohms, fan cooling would be standard too. I would recommend a fan in that setup even if you were running one of the converted 700's which we call a WOPL 1000. Yep that's right we taske a sandard PL 700 and make a true earthshaker out of it. I'm not saying those ESS's would eat up a 400, that would depend on how reactive they were and a response curve woul be nice to see if they dip to 2 ohms or less at certain frequencie

Are you talking The Heil Ess AMT 1's??

Those are some sought after speaks in some corners of the world. Have not heard a pair myself in the flesh but have heard nothing but good about them, goosepimple stuff IIRC.

IIRC the Heil Air Motion Transformer was a major change in the way a mid and high range frequency was reproduced, I wish i was more familiar with them, although as more members see this thread I believe we'll have a wealth of info forthcoming.

After a short search , Heil is still in business with a sharp website and I see the diaphrams are still available for the Air Motion Transformer, impressive.
