OK, it's all fair, and I didn't notice your question until after the auction. Upping the bid in no way makes ypou any different in my eyes, all's fair. what i was wondering is , as a member of Phoenix we try not to beat each other up on stuff like that. I don't need it, and was bought to resell after a recap and some op-amp upgrades. what was you max bid??

Your info about the ess's tipped me off and your style of prose and punctuation sealed the ID .
I felt bad after that thinking I beat you out of something you had your heart set on to complete part of your system. I got aggressive because of it's pristine appearance. I can fix the electronics, but the minty nature of the faceplate and chassis is almost impossible to duplicate. Please accept my apology if i beat you out of it. PM me please.

A 2000 Ser I or Ser II is a great way to go also. Minimum component count and they have come out with an adapter to upgrade the old RC4136 op-amp to any modern dual quad of choice. Makes a killer pre when done right.

I have 4 0r 5 around here. It does not degrade the signal to y the rca's, so don't shy away from a good pre for that reason. Let me know if you are interested, I HAVE TOO MUCH STUFF.

The original integrated circuit used in the front diff amp of the pre-amp. It was first generation IC and rather noisy. Brown-Dog company came out with an adapter to replace the 14 pin dinosaur with a double 8 pin op-amp. Very quiet, very warm, almost tubey sounding with the right op-amp---say a Burr-Brown OPA2134.

In the early 80's I had a pair of ESS 1B's driven by a 400. More than once my roomies melted the Heil diaphragms. I was never there when it happened so I'm guessing it was severe clipping. the local shop had an upgraded Teflon diaphragm. Melted them to. I really like the sound. Being a young idiot working in pro sound I sold them and got a pair of JBL4311's. the 400 and the JBL's rocked our neighborhood like nothing else and I didn't have speaker failures. the nice neighbors never called the law.

My music only room is dubbed the 70's room. If it wasn't built in the 70's it doesn't make it in the room. It's all P/L gear and I have a set of refoamed ESS 1A's that I found at the thrift for $30. all the drives had dry rot. Refoamed them and love them. No melted driaphagms from a 400.

I've got a 2000II and some day that will get heavily modded. It has another chip that is obsolete. It is the perect biamp project for R-L and summed base. It has so many possibilities.

Echowars at AudioKarma has a rebuilt pair of ess 1b's, I think, in a new cabinet they look and sound great.

Parts express sells the diaphragms for the Heils.
