Pioneer PL-518 Has A New Home

This afternoon I got the PL-518 spinning and playing tunes... Everything is now working except I'll need to track down some of those isolation feet. I have not had a turntable for about 15 years so it's pretty cool to watch those black plastic sheets produce music! I even found my Diskwasher (with original box, manual) that I bought back in the late 70's from the Record Shop in WY. Photos will follow shortly..... At the moment all the equipment in the place actually works, go figure.... Now to get some shelves built!

Hi Robert,

If all else fails, and you want a set of Pioneer turntable feet, I have an older Pioneer PL-115D turntable I would be willing to send you the feet from. In fact, if anyone else needs parts I'm willing to part the PL-115D out.

It seems after a little research, the Pioneer PN PEB-086 was also used on PL-540 and PL-560 models.

Nando.

I've still got my original Discwasher system and extra brush/box & mega fluid bottle :alien: , the dustcover for the system is beat to shit though

btw, the dustcover on the Thorens is a Pioneer PL-31D, it fits pretty good :pirate:

I'm out of magic elixir to clean my LPs. I know, there's a particular formula and proportions to concoct my own mix. I think isopropyl alcohol is a major ingredient, but what else?

No alcohol Nando!!! Never buddy! I went to my local used Lp shop a couple years back and the clerk spins all day, he'll even play your choices if he's in a good mood :D , well he was using this stuff called Groovy Cleaner, http://www.turntablelab.com/dj_equipmen ... 4/637.html

Absolutely swears by it, not just because they sell it, it's the reason why they sell it, it's the best thing outside of a VPI machine, you spray it on the record and wipe with the special cloth, he played a really nasty Lp for me, then used the Groovy. All the surface noise vanished way below what it was before, and I swear it sounded better too. Anyway after you treat an Lp like that, all you have to do after that is just spray a bit on you brush and your good to go! I get it for $10 for the 5oz spray bottle, but now I'm gonna get the big 32oz jumbo online to refill (I'm almost out). It's cheap and it really works excellent, I highly recommend it, especially if you buy used alot :D

Thank you for the advice, stuwee. I may look into Groovy Cleaner. I would love to buy a VPI 16.5, but $500 is a lot of coin for my small collection of 500 albums.

Nando.

Ok, my bad, Groovy does have alcohol in it, I just double checked, and the 32oz refill is $44, but still for a deep cleaning solution that you can use as a wipe later it's not that expensive. gamve (Graham) has a VPI and says it's a noisey bugger

Are you an AK member? you could do a search there for a home brew.

I thought it might, as I can sniff the alcohol from five paces out of my spray bottle mister. I'm not an AK member, but if you do find the formula please post it on our forum as a public service, stuwee. We trampled on Robert's thread, but I hope we kept somewhat on topic.

Nando.

Happy 4th Everyone!

Ha, if the thread was not tramped on I would not feel like part of the group! :D

Lee, The DiskWasher came from a place in Cheyenne, WY called the Record Shop. That is what the price tag on the box says. I have the walnut disk cleaner, manual, 3/4 bottle of magic liquid, orginal box, and also the stylus cleaner like Stuwee's photos.

I also read that alcohol is not good for records, same goes for pinch rollers on tape decks. From what I gathered the alcohol dries out the rubber and plastics making them hard and brittle. I just wonder if the magic liquid isn't mostly distilled water and a touch of alcohol to clean a bit but not really hurt anything..... I always wondered what Armor-All would do???

Nando, Thanks, Let me just look around a bit for feet so I don't have to bother you. The current one's are useable just don't move the things. The rubber tube just broke into two pieces.

Thanks,
Robert

I have Disc washer too. I also have a sit and spin like Jim has. I spent many hours sitting and spinning LPs. LOL I forget the real name. Well my table is almost clean should I bring the red beast out here and do the tonearm rewire. I just might. LOL

Unless you're spinning some big band tunes from prior to 1946 on 78s made of shellac, then a solution comprised of alcohol should be OK. Alcohol will dissolve shellac. I hate to buy stuff, when I could batch my own. I don't like immersing the LP in water because of possible damage to the paper label.

Robert, there are more than a few owners of PL-518, 540, and 560 turntables that are having the same issue with deteriorating table feet, as I discovered on the internet.
