You got a screaming deal on those, Mike. They languished on craigslist for some time with a price reduction in the meantime. The last price I think I saw was in the $300-$400 range for the pair. Why didn't I pick them up? I spoke to Gordon at Innovative Audio about them. They were missing the grilles and would be difficult to replicate. The seller had refinished the veneer in a different stain and I felt there might be more wrong with them. But, I'm glad you got them and have them running in your present system. So, what a fluke that you joined this forum and we already have something in common, besides living not too far away from each other. I live in Squamish, B.C..

I might even have an old short review on the Pioneer HPM-200 speakers from one of my stereo magazines. Once I find it, I will scan it and post it in a Pioneer HPM-200 speaker thread. Might even have an old advertisement, too.

Nando.

Lee: B.C. or British Columbia is called Lotus Land.

"The reason why Vancouver is called Lotus Land is because the people inhabiting the land are known to be Lotus eaters. Inspired by the epic poem, The Odyssey, the lotus eaters are the kind of people who know how to take some time off from their busy lives and enjoy the wonders of nature. Most inhabitants of the city are laid back and commonly find time to participate in communal gatherings and other activities that make them deviate from work and responsibilities."

repair list for hpm 200's

Hi Nando

I Thought you might find this interesting

Here is a list of the work that was done to the speakers as per instructions at Alloy Music Victoria:

- Mid range, fixed old repair to voice coil

- IE: re-solder lead wires to voice coil, Note, was repaired 3 times as old lead wire keep breaking , last time replaced lead wire with new wire, repaired burn hole in surround caused by a previous owners repair, reason: too hot a soldering iron was used to repair the lead wire.

- re-contoured the mid -dome, realigned the voice coil re-contoured the cloth suspension on loaded woofer

- all drivers removed, inspected, bench tested and measured

Recorded values -

- speaker 1
woofer 1 6.3 ohm
woofer 2 15.7 ohm
Midrange 6.6 ohm

- speaker 2
woofer 1 6.2 ohm
woofer 2 15.2 ohm
Midrange 6.8 ohm

- all tweeters and super tweeters tested fine.
- anything not within 1% of rated values replaced.
- All crosscover components including wiring were tested
- all push on wire connectors replaced on crossovers, and

- a number of the wires were replaced.

- 2 10 uf capacitors replaced

- 2 22 uf capacitors replaced

Just another welcome aboard.
See you like to mix the old and new technologies too.
I use a similar system for everyday listening.
Flac from the hard drive though JRMC into a ESI Juli@ analog outputs into a SX Pioneer.
Best of both worlds.
I have heard those speakers and they are keepers.
Well worth investing some time into.
Good Luck.

Thanks for the details on what it took to bring the HPM-200s back to their former glory, Mike. Essentially, you saved a lot by not having to replace any drivers. If you still have the one grille, you could see about having it replicated.

I am also curious about what led you to find this forum. A Google search for something?

Not unless my sheer handsomness brings tears to your eyes....
Well I can't lie, it certainly was a combination of the two.

Can't come up with an exact figure of proportionality but I think we both know which side the pendulum is swinging to.

Hahahaha.
