nelsress begins his WOPL 400 project

Collector Covers

Hell Nav, I had no idea it was illegal, I think I'll just leave them nude then!! :)

Lee, I wasn't really concerned about kids or pets, I hadn't really thought about that or the fact that I could get a jolt from them, I was just wondering if there was an advantage having them either covered or not. The perforated aluminum sounds like it would be good but I've never done any metal fabrication and I hate to use my FC WOPL 400 as my "guinea pig", so to speak. I'll have to think about that. How were the originals held in place? I don't see any place for cover screws, the only holes I see are for the transistors electrodes (don't know if that's the correct term?) and the transistor mounting screw holes. Were they just friction fitted between the fins? Thanks.

They snap into place under spring tension formed by the design of the cover. There is a small machined groove at the top and bottom of the heatsink that these thin metal aluminum covers snapped into.

There is no functional need to cover them other than the shock/shorting hazard that leaving them exposed presents.

Update:

Finally ordered everything from Joe/WO for my full comp WOPL 400 yesterday. When Joe invoiced me he told me he was swamped in back log stuff so whenever it gets here we'll get it started. I've still got lots of pre-winter projects to finish here at the homestead before I can start in earnest anyway. That being said I am still anxious to get going, anxious/nervous as the more I read about this project, the more I realize it's probably the most difficult I've undertaken and anxious/excited to both get going on it and, most importantly, to be blown away by it in the end. Optimism abounds with all you guys behind me to help out along the way (thanks!!).

Nelson

P.S. Hey Nav, I don't know if she can play a lick but your latest avatar is my new favorite "guitarist"! ;-)

Joe's installation notes

Have you downloaded Joes installation.notes ??

Hi Lee, no, I don't believe I have, at least I checked my documents and didn't find any. Were these pointed out before and I missed them or did I forget, which is entirely possible!! :) I imagine a link will come with all the parts I ordered, yes? If not, a link would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Lee.

Follow the White Oak link on the index page and when you get on Joes site there will be a documentation section. You'll find it there.

She may not be able to play a lick - but she can lick and play.

Thanks Lee, I'll go download it so I can peruse it!

Now is a good time to study the assembly notes for the backplane boards. There are 23 pages of them but they cover the 400 and 700 backplanes in QUASI and FULL complementary versions. For the driver board you need to download the BOM ( bill of materials). It lists the parts in order that they should be mounted AND what parts should be mounted. The Rev "D" driver board can be configured for quasi and full comp also.....being familiar with the documentation will cut down on the confusion later..

Nelson, I e-mailed the ones you need. On the Rev "D" board documention you need starts on page 8. I run copies of pages 8 thru 11 and then cross of the parts on the list as they are installed.

Thanks Lee

Got 'em, thanks a lot. I briefly scanned them last night, they look very helpful. Now I just have to remember how to change the temp on my soldering station!! :) I don't remember what it's set at but whatever it is, it was what was recommended by Joe Curcio for when I bought it to do my first amplifier rebuild-a Curcio Premium mod on an old Dynaco ST-70. I've done several projects since and never changed the setting. It came with a magnet to change the setting so it can't be accidentally changed by just turning the dial. It's a Weller WES51. I'll have to dig up the owners manual. Thanks again Lee.

Same one I have Nelson...except it has a dial...

Mine has a dial too Lee but, as I recall, turning it without holding the magnet "pencil" on a certain spot doesn't change the temp, it just turns the dial...at least that's what my memory's telling me! I'm just a kid at heart but "it's" 60 so, I could be wrong!! ;)

Must be optional or something. Never heard about that..
