or this one?

Neither of those. Basically the choice is between the PCI Express connector... here.. (hmm.. refurbed will save ya a good 50.00)..

Xonar Essence STX

or here with the standard PCI connector...

Xonar Essence ST

Either of them allow you to roll your own amps inside. There are 3 - 2 for each channel's I/V converter and 1 "buffer".

Well, if Lee would put a "certain" sound card in his PC and get it hooked up and working, you'd have another opinion besides my own..

Go with the ASUS Xonar. The M-Audio is a close second, but you can run into issues with drivers versus motherboard chipsets with the M-Audio.

Start "there"... IMHO...

One day i gotta go this route as the stock sound card on this new tower is pretty noisy. If I turn up the volume on my pre with no music playing I can hear the his and the HD spinning in my outboard HD.... Never heard that with the 0202
You might want to find info on the motherboard...some are guilty of passing noise (in the cases of some old P4 boards, there is little to be done). I don't know if the HDs can be shielded but if you can't establish a proper groundit sounds like it's not favorable.

Actually the Xonar's power connection is direct from the power supply i.e. it has a 4 pin molex connector right on the edge. That black cover is also the shield for the analog section. It doesn't take it's power from the motherboard.

And Lee does have it installed in his computer. Haven't made the 20 foot patch cords yet.

Hey everyone..its great to hear these Ideas...Creative Sound Blaster X-Fi Titanium HD PCIe Sound Card powered by THX TruStudio Pro, is a great card, and the Asus Intros Audiophile Xonar DS 7.1 but the asus card has the 7.1 surrond and if your only going for music its a waste...if your worried about wires build the system and remote desktop through a laptop as your control system. Can explain if you need. You want a decient computer and a large drive, if the computer is older just partion the drive into 3 segments and the computer will see the whole drive with different drive letters...C being the operating system and the other letters could be your storage. I love IBM pc's excellent website for drivers and all the neccesary software to restore the entire computer and solid computer. for music a P3 or P4 with 2 gig memory will work great...the usb dac is only as good as the hardware...pc is the best way..excellent OS to use is windows 2000 solid build and less viruses for that version but XP and Win7 will work also...as for downloading FLAC is great for lossless of quality, or a rate of 192k or higher for MP3, windows media 7 has the MP3 decode standard...If you want any help or info I'm here for ya's....

sorry lee, techie side was predominent yesterday since I was writing programs all day..
So if you have a old computer your going to use, some dont see a big hard drive so one way to over come this is to break it down into segments, ex. 6 year old computer can only see a 500gig hard drive, if you install a 1terra bite hard drive the computer will only see and use 500gig of it. but if you partiton in half the computer will see 2 500gig drives and assign the letters as C and D drive so you still have a 1tb drive but split in half as 2 500gig segments. C can D for your programs and operating system and D can be storage for all your media.
As for the sound card get the best audiophile soundcard you can afford, make sure if you put in computer it is PCI socket type, or a external sound card as USB...they make both types. Install software first then shut down machine and pull power cord out and install card internal then start comp...and it will see card and load, if USB just load software and plug in USB..USB is considered plug and play...sometimes...lol
Windows media 7 and 9, does a excellent job decoding to mp3 and also have srs sound and eq...
If you really want to try it I can guide you along the way...really simple. If you already have a computer setup you can just buy a external hard drive and plug into computer and put all your music on that, the great part about that is its not locked to that computer and you can bring to friends house and use on his computer...Dont want to confuse anyone so if any of you are confused, I can explain in more detail...with pics...

LOL.. hey.. Lee already has an M-Audio 24/96 in his PC, but somehow he just hasn't gotten that "round tuit" yet to making the physical connection to his audio equipment.

I've been waiting for 'im to do that so I can show 'im what Shponglin' is like at a 96K sampling rate with a few .flacs I've done... Even called him "chicken".. but it aint worked yet.
