Mono Amp Powers Supply's

Well, y'all thought I was a bit loony.... Now it's proven. Started kicking around ideas as to what to use for housing the power supply's for this crazy project. I think I fingered it out. All ya need is some cheap tool boxes and start whackin.... Now I'll be able to take them to WoodStick since were gettin the band back together, and not have to worry about gettin the nice equipment all beat up. Feedback is encouraged. It was the only enclosure that didn't cost a ton of money. I think I'll name our band TOOL(box)... Whadda ya think???

get a cheap toolbox, get rid of the wussy rivets, do your layout and start cuttin. I still need a few more beer can caps, and my rectifiers..... do this X 2 and yer all set.

had to order some stand up capacitor mounts from Hong MoFo Kong, they were too expensive to buy from mouser.... Ordered standoffs for the Soft Start, Bridge rectumfiers, and a a few bulk caps. I see Mouser has had them (both High Post and Low Post which both work perfectly) (160V 15,000uf). They have had them in stock for a while.[h=1]E36D161HPN153MDA5M[/h][h=1]E36D161LPN153MDA5M[/h])

Rail Voltages are spot on at +117 VDC and -117 VDC

Got some more testing to do..... Screw Load Testing, just lick your fingers and hold on.....

As for the "Soft Start's" I am experimenting with, I think I got my 20 bucks worth. They seem to be the ticket (I.e. no brown outs during the charging of the 6 bulk caps). They also came with the transistors to turn off the circuit in case of a heat problem. They seem to be adjustable but the board didn't come with any directions so I gotta play.... The first power supply is about finished and between taxes and the Honey DO NOW list, I'll be back in the shop working Monday... Yee-haaaaa...

I added a couple more CAPS to the circuit. I don't like running out of gas in the middle of the desert..... I'll post some pics on monday, the first power supply is about finished. Just need to mount a couple things (and add my intake and exhaust fans).

Got my PL-36 boards built, and "Engineered" a back plane for Joe's back planes which I will be running in the "Cascade" mode which will be 2 pre drivers and 20 outputs for one channel. I will repeat the same set up for the second channel. Should be interesting. 800 plus Watts per??? BOING!!!!!!!! HUH?

Anyway, the heat sink fins will attach just like the originals. Lucky the wife aint here, I'm running the Heat Sink Fins through the dishwasher.... HA.... More to follow as I make progress......

You should get at least 1100 watts in mono mode for each channel if your power supply is +/- 100VDC (regulated at least as good as a factory 700). Judging from the looks of those toroids, you should have a fairly well regulated (unregulated) power supply.

I have also discovered that C116 and C117 are not necessary and actually cause a "turn-on" thump, where typically, the original PL-36 pcb does not do this. In addition, I would not recommend using a modern high speed op-amp in place of the original LF353 (such as an OPA2134). If you want to experiment with different op-amps, then use op-amps similar to the speed and bandwidth as the LF353.

Nick,

Early 400 and 700 series 2 amps used LF356's.
Later 400 and 700 series 2 amps used LF351's.
The Dual 500/D-500's only used the LF356's.

Do you prefer the LF353's over the LF356's and LF351's?

Thanks Nick, I'll go through your recommendations and adjust what I have on the board. I actually have TL072's in there right now, if these are not suitable, I can change them out. I did look at the specs and concluded that these should interchange as they are very close. I stayed away from the OPA2134.

When testing the torroids, I was sitting Idle at 117V (+ and -) for the rails as seen in page 1 of this post.

Joe is building me up another back plane kit so it won't be long now till I can start assembly. I put in a request to Navo for some 14 gauge to wire it all up with but had not heard back yet. After trying to figure out what to house this all in, I I also looked at doing a Dr. Frankenstien (complete with a Tesla Coil) and mount it all in the open........ No drinking and smoking when operating the amp..... HUH?????????????????

Just got to match Joe's back plane signals with your PL-36 board......................

Perry's use of a TL0-72 is basically the Texas Instruments version of the National LF353, which I'm sure you are aware.

I do like the 353. It's not a current hog like the 356, but I prefer bi-polar input op-amps. They seem quieter in my circuits.
