That and the fact the stock 700's didn't have the low end all that tight anyway. In the 14 boards if you swapped out c6 with a 470 Uf the bottom end got tight and right. Don't know excactly what it would take on the 0171 board.

Jer, I'll send some caps with the trannys and DCP board. I'll pack em tonight and get em to Fed-Ex in the morning.

That's awesome Lee - I'll ship the ones I bought in return when the guy ships 'em out. Think it may be the caps causing the weak low end? I mean.. really weak.. like not really able to "move" the big woofs I got to the point they distort pretty badly.

No, those 9800's are plenty to do the job, it's the board design really. See you are spoilt. You've heard the White Oak version. No going back Jer, there really is no going back........

There is no C6 on the PL0171 but you could add one easily enough. Locate both of the R30 resistors, they are 270 Ohm resistors tied on one end to the junction of R24 (10K), C9 (.01), C13 (120pf), R25 (100K), and R37 (12K). On the other end is ground. Visually, they are both alongside R18 (3.3K) in the upper 1/3 of the board, kind of right below the pair of C4 and C5 (220 pf) input filter caps.

Lift the side of R30 going to ground and put the positive leg of the 470 mfd capacitor on the resistor and the negative leg of the capacitor to the ground location.

Try that and let us know if it helps the bottom end.

No C6 is needed on the PL0171 board. It is DC coupled. Which input are you using Jer? The normal one which is AC coupled or the DC input one?

If you are using the normal input, you need to make a change in C1 value from 0.47uF to 2.0uF or something close to that to have no rolloff in the bass region.

to keep it simpler, I would just recommend using the DC input jack.
Hi Joe.

That is what I used the other night. I don't know if I'm describing the issue with the bass properly. It's as if the amp loses it's current ability to drive at low freqs. Hmmm.. maybe I should put it back up and scope it with an input of 20-40 hz.. that might show something better than I can explain.

Not surprised Jer, there were significant changes made in the PL700/400 design after the PL0171 in certain key areas, the current source power supply for Q3/4 being one of them and the current source for Q17 being another area. Let's just leave it by saying they made serious improvements after this board's introduction :)

Yes trim pots are touchy. You always want to go higher lat it stabilize and bring it back down. You are wiping the pot to get correct readings.

Those were reeeealy bad. I used to use tric' btw for more "military" applications. For pots and them daggone ICS switches out of the P3 Orion.

Ok, "and so it begins"..

Joe I have to say - the craftsmanship on the board is incredible. That and how the time was taken to label all of the component packs in the kit... wow!

Time to make some good "flux boogers"... hehe

Have fun Jer, hoping we took most of the mystery out of building the kit.

Observe the notes on the BOM bottom about Q1-2 transistor orientation, flats up
Q3-4, flats down.

Well, good progress on populating the board. Not "Lee-Speed", but hey... I actually have to look and see where to put everything. :happy2:

Yessir, I now have flux boogers in my nose. Ahh, memories.. this is fun!:thumbright:

Well, we're getting there. Resistors... nonpolar caps... Should have it done just in time to get the rest o' the parts. Might be singing this weekend.
