Jer's 400 PLWO Thread

Ok, der right caps now coming... :glasses8:

One step closer now.. The driver board's complete and knocked out... Next up will be the chassis work, for which there's a bit of that to be done!

I am alway nuts up with the star washer on the TO-220 transistor tab side to prevent buggering up the board Jer. No technical requirement or concern, just one of board preservation.

Nuts up is SOP in my world Joe. From our 3/8 holding valves together, to the 3" threads holding our wrist pins together. Bolt/nut setups are more likely to be noticed loosening in that configuration than the other.

Yes, Jer purchased the kit and I always supply the MPSA18s for the widest gain bandwidth and lowest noise figure.

Flats facing up for the MPSA18s. Jer reads the instructions, glad to see.

Any guesses why??

No clue Lee, other than these are probably coming off the mil spec line (CM05) at CDE. I am looking to qualify Simic as well but am kinda leary about caps from other than the USA.

But, of course!!

Working on the bloomin' insides now. Man, might as well have been a piece of sheet metal with holes... This 400 really did suffer a terrible fate..

(wifey's got the camera and is out n about.. pics later.. heheh)

Nice job so far Jerry! I do miss the days of point to point wiring instead of using boards though

And dagnabit... Lee, I just got your Fedex... Sometime ago, actually hehe - The delivery guy snuck up on me, or he would have been hauling off your loaner 700B in the cabbage case.

:naka:

Ah well, I guess I'll make the drive out to the dropoff point a lil later today...

You need to order the correct kit for that application Jer. Send the other kit back unless you have other use for it. I have stock on the right caps for that application with the brackets.

Joe

One piece 18,000/ 80 volt??

One piece 18,000/ 80 volt??

Yeah hmmmm! (I opened the box). Now I gotta choose, hehe. But one thing it depends on is how "hot" this guy will be when I get to the point of applying power to it. Kind of leery about the 80 wvdc if this one turns out to me too much higher than that??

Lee wow.. what a goodie box it is!! I can almost see meself applying power this weekend. I'll catch you up on the flip side, of course..

80V is too low Jer, PL danced with the devil. Notice that over time they pushed it up to 85V with their purchasing power of 5900uF caps but even that is not enough margin. The PL700 is even worse.

Jer, I tried to send a littgle of what you might need. Bias trannies are wayyyyy cool I thought. Those 2N6517's are for Don's 700 board.

Joe, those caps are code dated 9701, is that after they gave them a little headroom??

If you use them on 80V rails, make sure you form them at 80V first with a 1K resistor. Ensure that the leakage current goes down only during the forming process and never reverses and goes back up. If it goes back up, that is a bad sign.

Got the left side redone with the new socket too.

Was just thinking of something here.... Wouldn't it be a good idea to put in, say... I dunno... 1 amp rail fuses for when you're FIRST powering it up and/or doing some probing, etc? At least if gawd forbid you get something shorted out, the theory is that the damage done might be a lot less than with the "working level" fuses. Eh.. eh???

Going to tackle the right side now then find the camera.. :thumbright:
