Damn that reality!! Thanks for that treatise Joe. That should satisfy most questions on the subject.

Gepetto, excellent write up. Except for untying the jumpers on the Main Board, this is what I was going to do. I don't necessarily see a problem with running both sides of the board with a common tie to the power and the power ground points. Now, if the amp had separate transformers, bridges, and cap banks, then maybe. For the front end I am thinking about floating the inputs above ground with a 2.2 Ohm resistor. I did this with my Hafler 220 and I have been very happy with it. I have often wondered why PL used a 2.7 Ohm resistor on the Right channel and a 56 Ohm resistor on the Left channel.

In order to do this I will have to cut the solid bus wire that goes from the input jacks on the back to chassis enclosure ground.

Thoughts?

Re: Jerry's " ONLY ONE IN THE COUNTRY" Phase Linear 700 Thre

I have a question on the pinout of the Q6 transistor, 2N3403. My schematic has the color code hand written as follows:
Base=Black
Collector=Red
Emitter=Brown

But the pinout code on the datasheet says the configuration is ECB, which makes the configuration:
Base=Brown
Collector=Red
Emitter=Black

Which is it? mine are mounted with the leads facing up and the mounting flange hole is on the left...

.......... B C E ???

Mine are BCE and it doesn't seem to make any difference which way the tab is as long as the flat part is down. If in question, start with your tester and identify the base, BCE from there.

The standard that Phase linear USUALLY adhered to for the 2N3403 is C=Red, E=Brown, B=Black. All my amps conform to this color coding.

I say USUALLY because there are always outliers that prove me wrong if I say ALWAYS :)

This is what I have as measured:

I never realized they were "left" and "right" handed???
2N3403 Pins.jpg[/attachment:sua2opdu]

As you can see, the ones in my PL700B are both "left-handed"PL700B Old Board Removed.jpg[/attachment:sua2opdu]

I'm not sure if I want to leave my originals as a test of the installation for the board or just replace the Q6's just to be sure they will be OK....

I will test the devices in place and see what I get to confirm your historical observations.

OK, on my transistor tester the Q6's test 396 and 457 for hFE, the ones I have in my parts bin measure 206 and 210 hFE. And the color codes match my schematic and the observations of Gepetto - Red=Collector, Brown=Emitter, and Black=Base.

Thanks!

Were they both BCE or tab dependent?

Not tab dependent - although they claim ECB on the datasheet (and EBC for some) for type TO-92HS (the picture shows tab on the right) the direction of the tab does not seem to matter although it is the most visual aspect of the device. My guess the that the flat on the actual transistor faces the back (against the heated surface) and this determines the orientation regardless of the direction of the tab.

I saw that in 2008 you were trying for a group order for these, did that ever happen? How many did you order?

I got zilch for response on the group buy Mark, everyone thought was crazy for spending 5.00 dollars for a TO-92 trans. I did buy 20 at one time though. Didn't I send you a couple?? I just counted and still have 16 left if you need some.

Re: Jerry's " ONLY ONE IN THE COUNTRY" Phase Linear 700 Thre

I do have the ones you sent me and they are a much closer match than what is in my PL700B. I'm trying to determine if that is important? I was just curious because I ran across that post where you were trying to get some takers for the group buy.

So I finished the board except for a couple of resistors that are heading my way in the mail and the board looks good with the Black Gates.

Choice!!!!! The matched thing isn't an issue as the bias pots take care of discrepencies. There can be an issue if they don't have enough gain, you run out of range on the bias pots and have to substitute different values at R19. Working on Jer's 700 today, i'll get it to the test stage today, post pics ibn a bit. Good lookin board Mark, love the harness connectors!!!!!!

Where did you get the black gates. I may sub the caps with black gates on my kit pre. Lee installed them in my 700B.

Finally getting to it. Got the "stray inductance caps on the +/- rails, the "zoebel " network is being a PITA, mainly cause I'm using 5 watt 10 ohm resistors when 2 watt will do.

Soldered the output wires from the DC protect PCB's to the speaker posts. i left the PCB end unsoldered so i can now remove the board and take care of everything underneath the board. The meter outputs, Zoebel network, and shielded pair off the input RCA's to the volume pots.

Larry, I have had the Black Gates for awhile. I think the last installment came from Angela
http://angela.com/blackgateandelnacapacitors.aspx

The difference between them and Elna Cerafine or SILMIC II is 99% psychological and 1% audiophile, kinda like a proof SBA $ and a 1893-S Morgan $, both worth a dollar at face value, now one is harder to find than the other so it is worth somewhat more...
