Jerry's " ONLY ONE IN THE COUNTRY" Phase Linear 700 Thread

Re: Jerry's " ONLY ONE IN THE COUNTRY" Phase Linear 700 Thre

The only electrolytic that matters in this board is C6 and that is bypassed by a Polypropylene cap so that is the one you should focus on. The remaining ones are either power supply bulk caps or only in play during current limit when the sonics are not going to be any good anyway.

At least the squeal during current limit "clamp" will have an audiophile ring to it!!

Re: Jerry's " ONLY ONE IN THE COUNTRY" Phase Linear 700 Thre

On the 2N3403 discussion, the metal HS strap is more important than the choice of transistor. I have knocked dead 2N3403 transistors out of the HS strap to salvage it by glueing another TO-92 in the place of the original. There are many TO-92s with similar electrical characteristics to the 2N3403. The most important aspect of the device in this circuit configuration is the negative tempco on the B-E junction which is the same for any silicon transistor and the ability to couple it thermally to the heatsink (the strap).

Very true Lee... :-)

Re: Jerry's " ONLY ONE IN THE COUNTRY" Phase Linear 700 Thre

So what is your recommended replacement for the 2N3403??

Re: Jerry's " ONLY ONE IN THE COUNTRY" Phase Linear 700 Thre

All of you have been very kind not to mention all the filings and cuttings within the guts of the amp. Before final soldering of the inputs etc, I take a huge shop vac, neck the suction down to 1" and get after it. For the stuff you can't get close to or adheres a bit much, I lightly spray a 1" fine bristle brush with WD 40 and brush away. Every other stroke i run it by the vacuum nozzle to clean it. VERY effective.

Re: Jerry's " ONLY ONE IN THE COUNTRY" Phase Linear 700 Thre

What will have to be converted on mine? Do I need to start shopping for black gates?

Re: Jerry's " ONLY ONE IN THE COUNTRY" Phase Linear 700 Thre

In a search I did find a guy in Europe with a bunch to sell. With the conversion rate they are very high. I may look again. I saw the ones at Angelas. They didn't have many. Maybe is is psychological but it makes you wonder if I used the different caps would it sound as good? Like I only use silver solder on everything. Does it make a difference? I don't know; but it is something I just do.

C6 is the only Blackgate you would need, 100uf at 100 volts. one for each channel.

Re: Jerry's " ONLY ONE IN THE COUNTRY" Phase Linear 700 Thre

So, how do you make long twisted pairs?? With a drill and vise!!

Re: Jerry's " ONLY ONE IN THE COUNTRY" Phase Linear 700 Thre

Input shielded pair soldered along with Zoebel network and finally the board soldered in for good.

A short break for dinner then Joe's board is next, then the test.

Re: Jerry's " ONLY ONE IN THE COUNTRY" Phase Linear 700 Thre

Cool trick ain't it!!

Re: Jerry's " ONLY ONE IN THE COUNTRY" Phase Linear 700 Thre

The most important thing is how the music makes you feel. If you think putting your power cable in a bow knot makes it sound better, then by all means go for it.

Re: Jerry's " ONLY ONE IN THE COUNTRY" Phase Linear 700 Thre

DC should always be a twisted pair.............course you knew that.

Re: Jerry's " ONLY ONE IN THE COUNTRY" Phase Linear 700 Thre

Is this a potential problem? (See the small red circle)

Re: Jerry's " ONLY ONE IN THE COUNTRY" Phase Linear 700 Thre

Good catch. Stub from a cut off, still one more vacuuming to go. Good eye Mark!!!!!

Re: Jerry's " ONLY ONE IN THE COUNTRY" Phase Linear 700 Thre

Oh, not the twisted pair...but I did know that.
I was remarking about the Black Gates making one feel better about the music. Of course another consideration now is the counterfeit capacitors coming out of China/Hong Kong.

Re: Jerry's " ONLY ONE IN THE COUNTRY" Phase Linear 700 Thre

Funny there are no capacitors on the transistor wall in the PL700B...

200 posts, it's like were up to something. Congratulations everyone.

Yep, the dreaded TWISTED pair.
Agreed Mark, if the chinese will counterfeit a 15cent transistor a 20.00 cap would be irresistible!!!!
