Re: Jerry's " ONLY ONE IN THE COUNTRY" Phase Linear 700 Thre
It's kinda funny, the Series I's were better in the mechanical department than the B's, look at how the caps were mounted, very captive.
Q6, which is the temp compensating trans in all 400 and 700B's are mounted on the heatsink, in the 700 Series I they are mounted on the circuit board. How they sensed heat buildup on the heatsinks is beyond me. Thermal tracking of the outputs is usually pretty high on the priority list. Thermal runaway is not something you hear a lot about but it is a real phenomenon and has to be dealt with.
Joe had not considered the Series I when designing his universal replacement board, but as we talked about it last night, it became apparent that modifying the Ser I's to accept the new board was going to be way easier than originally thought. Two standoff's in the middle of the heatsink and 2 2N3403's on the heatsink and it becomes a 700B, maybe not as pretty, but definately the same sound and fury as a B.
When Joe redesigned the driver boards most of the PL bad traits were addressed, in the enhanced version coming sometime next year it will be a whole new world.
Electrolytic caps are understood a lot better than they were in 1972 and the dreaded oscillations should be a thing of the past, there was a lot of time spent on that aspect of the new board as well as power delivery, routing of low level signals, improved sonics by that and elimination of ceramic caps all together. With the new boards the PL's will be quieter with a cleaner sound. Not a bad result from a 40 year old Icon of Audio.
